Newport Golf Club’s Nick Matthews is 1 of 4 Hampshire U16 players to have been selected for the England South Region training squad for 2020.

The reigning Isle of Wight Junior and Matchplay Champion is still only 16 and has been a regular member of the Hampshire U16 and U18 teams over the past year.

After his success at the Farm Foods British Par 3 Junior Championship in 2018, Matthews has continued to make progress and finished sixth in the North of England Boys U16 Championship in August.

The South Region squad has a new manager for 2020 – and it is someone Nick knows very well. Rob Mulcahy shares management of Hampshire’s U16s and U18s with Nick’s dad Wayne, who is the Hampshire junior golf manager.

Mulcahy, from South Winchester GC, said:

“We had 34 applications from all the best athletes from Hampshire and Surrey which we narrowed down to 14 to invite to a selection day.

“We picked our team that we felt were the strongest and went for a variety of ages from those who have performed at national level, and have had success throughout the whole season.”

“Hopefully all the players in the South Region squad will benefit from the extra coaching they will receive from Kevin Flynn, who is based at Hayling Island’s Tournerbury GC, and go on to greater things as individuals – and with their counties – in 2020 and beyond.”
