Newport IW Football Club have this week announced a new third team, which will become active for the forthcoming 2016-17 football season.
Joining Newport IW’s first team, which is run and managed by Andy Sampson, will be Stuart Ross’ squad, which will now become known as ‘Newport IW A Team’ – they will continue in the Harwoods Isle of Wight Saturday League Division 2.
The new squad, now known as ‘Newport IW Reserves’ will enter the Hampshire Wyvern Combination Football League Division 1 (East), joining the likes of Alresford Town, Alton, Follands Sports, Hamble, Liss, Petersfield Town and Sholing.
Former Port manager John Linnington will be managing this new development squad which will benefit the other Newport teams. Barrie Wade, Roger McCormack, Justin Hughes, Mark Fletcher, David Yates, Ashley Wright and Pat Walsh will be part of the management team.
New manager John Linnington is excited about the season ahead. He said:
“This will be a massive step for these young players’ footballing progress with the ultimate aim of supporting the 1st team. We look forward to representing the club and hope the fans get behind this venture and show their support”.
The teams aim will be improving the young players from around the Island and will include players from last seasons Newport IW U16s team, plus many young experienced Island league players.
Football Club Secretary Lisa Woodward is equally excited about the club’s plans:
“Moving into the 2016/17 season at Newport IW FC, as a secretary I am extremely honoured and excited. This year we welcome a third team into the Wyvern Combination Football League which will be a stepping stone from our ‘A team’ to our ‘1st team’. Last year we went into every game confident and we believed in ourselves and I’m sure this will continue.
“I’d like to thank all the players and management as well as fans for their continued support”.
