New cycle routes could be created in Newport and Ryde to get more people out of their cars.
As part of a local cycling and walking infrastructure plan (LCWIP), the Isle of Wight Council is proposing new or improved cycle and walking routes across the 2 towns. It would be the first LCWIP for the Island and has been in the making since 2019.
The Isle of Wight Ramblers, CycleWight, Island Roads and town and community councils have already been consulted on the matter with the local authority now seeking the public’s opinion on the plans.
It is hoped the strategy will tackle congestion; increase cycling and walking activity, including the number of children using active travel methods to get to school; and promote the Island as a sustainable transport destination attracting green tourism.
If the council chooses to adopt the LCWIP, it could become a supplementary planning document and help influence new developments.
The proposed cycling and walking routes include:
Newport cycle routes
- Mews Lane to Newport Quay
- Pan to Furrlongs
- Shide to Stag Lane
- Church Litten to Newport Town Centre
- Gunville to Newport Town Centre
- Mountbatten Drive to Petticoat Lane
- Parkhurst to Newport Town Centre
- Dodnor Lane (North to South)
- Medina College / 1 Leisure to Newport Town Centre
- Cross Medina route
Ryde cycle routes
- Tesco to Ryde Esplanade
- Appley Road
- Puckpool to Ryde Interchange
- Smallrook Lane to Ryde Esplanade
- Great Preston Road to Ashey Road
- Binstead to Ryde Interchange
Newport walking routes
- Halberry Lane to Newport Quay
- Wellesley Way to Coppins Bridge
- Furrlongs to St George’s Way
- St John’s Road to Medina Avenue
- Carisbrooke Road to Newport Town Centre
- Mountbatten Drive to Sainsburys / Mill Street
- Parkhurst to Newport Town Centre
- Dodnor Lane / Monks Brook to B&Q Roundabout
Ryde walking routes
- Tesco to Appley Road
- Appley to the top of High Street
- Monkton Street to Ryde Esplanade
- Smallbrook Lane to St Jonh’s Road
- Upton Road to south end of High Street
- Binstead Hill to Ryde town centre
- Binstead estate to Ryde town centre
- Pellhurst Road to Ryde Golf Club
The consultation opened earlier this month but runs until midday on Friday 28th April. Comments can be submitted either via email to [email protected] or by post to Planning Services, Seaclose Office, Fairlee Road, Newport, PO30 2QS
You can view the LCWIP online here (https://beta.iow.gov.uk/environment-and-planning/planning/local-plan/supplementary-planning-documents/) or in person at County Hall or the council’s Seaclose Offices.

No matter how many cycle lane improvements you make, you won’t persuade parents from driving cars to take their little darlings to school…Or people driving their cars to work.
What those selfish people DON’T grasp is the UK is a cold, wet country for much of the year.
If you took all your children to school on a cycle, they, their packed lunch, their homework, books, PE equipment would all need to be fully water proof and carried SAFELY on their cycles.
This is very hard to do, and why the hell should people when the watch the better people, swan past in a dry warm, spacious car?
Sadly they will price people off the road, so that only the ‘better people’ can drive, then on far quieter roads, which is what all this ‘green’ rubbish is really about.
Keep the cycles for fun time and keep using the car for safety and comfort of your loved ones
Poor little deranged poppet. Get some wet weather gear. It has worked for centuries. Stop driving and destroying our planet!
Keep driving a car, up to you.
Cycling infrastructure can be up to 300x cheaper than car so it’s not like it’s going to cost much compared to constant repair of potholes made by heavy vehicles.
And people like me can enjoy cycling, endorphins and free daily exercise. And Netherlands save 3% on their GDP by people cycling: so me cycling means less taxes for you, even if you don’t decide to cycle yourself!
Stay in your car, that’s fine. But let me have nice infrastructure as well. I will cycle with others who get encouraged and you will have less cars on your roads.
“Netherlands save 3% on their GDP”
What, do you mean that cycling reduces their GDP by 3%??? Err, what nonsense.
Please learn what terms mean before writing nonsense.
Figure of speech? Why are people always so pedantic.
Here, that’s what I meant in case you couldn’t figure it out:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4504332/
> Cycling prevents about 6500 deaths each year, and Dutch people have half-a-year-longer life expectancy because of cycling. These health benefits correspond to more than 3% of the Dutch gross domestic product.
Hardly a figure of speech. Just wrong. Thank god for predants or would be living in mud huts and worshipping the Moon.
The study you linked to is a load of crap. The estimate was obtained using the “World Health Organization’s HEAT model”, which is a well-known load of crap. The WHO is hopelessly inept.
Netherlands isn’t much hotter either though.
UK is only 2C colder on average and has 150mm of rain more – but that’s the average stat for the ENTIRE UK including north of Scotland.
Here in south we are pretty similar to them.
Don’t be silly. Holland is flat, full of pot heads and coloureds, so only TWO things are similar to our beloved Island.
Nah, Japan isn’t flat either yet moms do just fine on their e-bikes called mamachari.
Obviously this was never done before cars…some people are so selfish and actually stupid. So what would be more expensive,, using a car to take kids to school, or getting the bus.. ?? Why become so dependant on cars.. ? I never once had a lift to school.. I either walked or used the bus.. soon the kids will EXPECT to be driven everywhere.. how sad you are…
Very true.
So many lazy persons in this world.
What happened to the good old days when parents walked their children to school.
No wonder so many children and their parents are obese.
One way to Stop persons driving to schools etc, charge for vehicles driving along
certain times of the day.
With modern technology this can easily be done via apps and when the rollout of
Camera’s are installed once gigabits is Islandwide it can happen anyway.
A 15 minute city will stop persons polluting the Island.
Whilst this sounds like a great idea in theory, practice so far on the Island shows that cyclists don’t tend to actually use cycle paths. That being the case, perhaps the money could be better spent elsewhere and not wasted on folly that nobody will actually use?
Absolutely right the racecourse is a perfect example of this, no one can overtake because of on coming traffic so you are stuck in a long slow moving queue which is causing the congestion that the council want to tackle, unless of course they ban cyclist from using the roads if a cycle path is available but that will never happen, so spend the money on something that the whole community will benefit from.
I can agree, and the reason the cycle path part is not used is because it is difficult to turn onto, and is not kept in a reasonable condition. If they made a nicer entrance to the cycle path by the Crematorium entrance and a better exit entrance other end, and make itr flat with no puddles, am sure cyclist would love it.. Another problem is from Crematorium to Ryde, sadly that cycle path turns toward Wootton station.. taking cyclist going or coming from Ryde out of their way Then no cycle path at all to Ryde, but can use the pathway down by Fishbourne Inn.. sadly along its route are many gates.. but that ends as well so cyclists back on the road, in the way of ignorant car drivers that are never happy, all they do is yell and swear ..
What’s the current % of route coverage by a cycle path?
Most often cycle paths just don’t go to where you want to go in my experience. Like, let’s say Island Riding Centre for some horse riding on the weekend? No way to go there on a cycle path cause there’s none. If there was one I’d totally choose that over the dangers speeding cars rolling over onto their roofs on Staplers Road 😀 So more, the merrier.
Most cyclists don’t use cycle paths, many choose to ride along side by side
holding each other’s hands p*ssing off motorists who actually pay to be on the road.
Make cyclists pay.
But roads are paid from common taxes? Even pedestrian who doesn’t cycle or drive pays for them.
But if you’d like to make cyclists pay for wear and tear they 15kg bike makes lets say £100 a year then for a 3000kg SUV that would be £20,000 a year 😉
Also, research shows riding two-abreast increases safety because it forces drivers to actually use the 2nd lane instead of doing a dangerous close pass.
I’d choose Red Squirrel Trail over main roads with cars ALWAYS when going to Newport on the weekend.
If there’s a good path, people will choose it.
Exactly! Have been held up in a long queue on the Blackwater Road many a time by a single bicycle. \yet there is a perfectly good cycle path running from Shide. They won’t use it so stop wasting OUR money
Try cycling today. Wind rain albeit Slightly warmer than the last six months of getting drenched whilst top councillors swish past in warm dry electric cars that we pay for.
Think again.
Fine for a hobby on nice days but no way replacement for a car.
Meanwhile 22% of trips done by bike in Oulu, Finland in -20C. Why are Brits so afraid of their super mild weather.
Poor little poppet. Get some wet weather gear. It has worked for centuries. Stop driving and destroying our planet!
Be great when they start the fuel ban… expensive electric cars.. high costs of electric… insurance sky high… bad drivers everywhere… come on get cycle lanes… and pavements for pedestrians. If someone walks to Newport, the quickest route from Ryde would have to be cross country, and no pavements though Havenstreet, or along the downs roads.. or Briddlesford, etc etc.. so it is NOT just for cyclists. it will aid walkers too. Get out of the cars… have a nice walk, or buy a cycle, or get an electric cycle.. the weather will always be here.. before cars there was weather believe it or not.. probably worse than now as no awful buildings blocking wind and rain…
It would be enough if they just stopped subsidising fuel from taxes of all citizens.
Somehow other things I own aren’t subsidised but drivers get free benefits from the society (including on street parking) just because.
I think it’s called “motonormativity” <- giving extra perks to cars as in: leaving car on a public road? Just fine. Leaving your fridge for a night on a public road? Fine them right away!!! Making people breathe in fumes from cars? No worries. Smoking right into some person’s face? Oh my god, so rude! etc.
A complete cycle path from Ryde to Newport would be good too.
That would be just for you then? 🙂
Find it amusing that most of the Ryde proposals are to link up the new housing estates at Pennyfeathers and West Acre with the town centre, yet the estates have not received final planning approval.
I guess we’re all being taken for a ride.
If the Wight Council think this is a wonderful idea why don’t they ditch their cars and set a example but we know they won’t they will come up with every excuse possible
Council should close its car parks to set an example. All council staff should walk or catch the bus.
If anyone can understand the maps, and what the different colours represent, they are far more clever than myself.
What a stupid statement by the deluded. It will not make anybody get “out of their cars” just be more money wasted, but thats fine, as long as it fits the greenwash agenda.
Lucas you are right BUT as people do with disobedience in children, FIRST they appeal to them, then when that fails those in control take away’the choice’
The powers that be will do this by continuing to demonise car drivers making it hard and costly to then force people off the roads.
Greenwash agenda!!! Some of us are actually trying to save the planet. Thickies like you should just button it.
The planet is going to do exactly what it wants, and a creature that isnt even capable of controlling its own breeding certainly will never control the weather, so enjoy whatever happens, the planet will be here long after the human race is gone..
I wouldn’t bet on that Nostradamus.
People have been modifying the climate for thousands of years.
Totally correct, Lucas. These morons who claim they want to save their doomed planet continue to breed because they are too stupid to realise that overpopulation is killing the planet far quicker than climate change ever will. They are also too dumb to understand that climate change is a constant occurrence that has been happening for millions of years, alternating between hot and cold. Remember the 80’s when all those “experts” told us we were going to die because of the hole in the ozone layer – that went very quiet didn’t it!
Because we stopped using CFCs and the hole is virtually now repaired. Change of behaviour fixed it.
And yet the cliff top cycle route between Shanklin and Sandown has been impassable for years and the local town councils want to ban cyclists from the revetment.
Surely better to maintain what is already supposed to exist than paying lip service elsewhere.
It’s totally fine just have to divert round three houses, such an inconvenience
I don’t think it’s fine at all for kids to be obliged to divert onto the main road at Skew Bridge, noted recently for it’s accidents, and I doubt many parents would.
You sure it’s totally fine? Because drivers here in comments moan about cyclists cycling slow on roads constantly 😉
The island is so small. What is wrong with slowing down because you will only ever be delayed by a few minutes.
STOP Vehicles parking on pavements would be a great idea.
Then we could all walk along Great Preston Road safely instead of
having to cross the Road due to vehicles being parked on the pavement
outside the old council houses along Great Preston Road.
Think pedestrians
The Island are clueless when it comes to Road Safety.
Perhaps a one way trip back to S.A would make you and your clones a little more kinder to those neighbours who fund your lifestyle and rent. Least it ought.
Why is there always a Yellow Vauxhall Corsa HJ62ZPV
parked on the pavement outside the Council Houses along Great Preston Road
Do the Tenants at No. 90 think they own the Pavement?
so frustrating that 1 Household can bring a complete Road to a standstill
Where is the District Steward of Ryde, does he not drive down
Great Preston Road to see how idiots park!
Pavements where I come from are for pedestrians not Idiots parking a vehicle
Scap this nonsense and reduce council tax. If cyclists want special routes, let them pay for it.
Cyclists don’t pay their way.
They use and abuse our roads.
All bicycles should have a number plate and pay am annual fee.
Also they should have insurance.
And you need to have your head tested
Annual fee for what?
Because roads are paid from common pot of taxes, even someone without a car nor bike pays for them already.
For wear and tear? How much would you like to charge for a 15kg bike? Because a typical car will then have to pay 150-200x more due to its weight, and vans and trucks 500-5000x more 😉
Insurance always works against risk. Risk of doing damage with a 15kg bike traveling at 20mph is negligible compared to 3000kg at 50mph or more. Given cost of bureaucracy it’s not worth it.
Look at Netherlands and their statistics of accidents with bikes. Good infra > everything else.
Hard to believe that less than 40 years ago when I was at school, everyone walked to school or cycled. I used to walk for 45 minutes to get to school what ever the weather. Amazingly, a raincoat kept me dry and a proper school bag kept my work and lunch dry too. We were all as fit as fiddles back then because we walked. All these pampered kids these days are being ruined. They lack independence and good health. In years to come, they will be obese and clueless. Many of their parents could benefit from a good walk too. On such a small island, there is very little need for cars when we have legs to walk with and an extensive bus service. Try walking and get rid of your cars.
Old folk today often moan of “generation snowflake” and how “soft” young people are…
…but then there are comments how boo hoo, it’s raining so my kid cannot ride a bicycle, this mild UK weather is killing us, we must stay protected in a SUV!
And talking about “comfort” it gives them and how cycling makes you sweat… from a nation beating obesity charts in Europe.
And – as you mentioned – especially on such a small island that can traversed from north to south in half an hour on an e-bike.
It’s so bizarre.
“In years to come, they will be obese and clueless.”
Err, not years, many already are.
But roads are much much busier and crowded now, and thus more dangerous, particularly for children. Parked cars are a nuisance – 40 years ago, not a problem because everyone went to work in them and residential streets were empty. Sadly resources for cycling and walking have been neglected for years. It’s just not the same experience as 40 years ago.
Nowdays people are so lazy they park on pavements outside where they live
because they are too lazy to walk.
We live in a lazy world nowdays.
Would be wonderful if could make a proper cycle path Ryde to Newport, Without need to ride on roads, as we all know car driver’s hate cyclists, and is difficult for many cyclists riding on roads, especially up hills, also with the fact the roads are often uneven, lots of pot holes near the edge and many puddles. Why not make a cycle lane on some or all roads. Many roads have extra wide pavements, they could be decreased to a smaller standard, Those without, the grass verge could be cut back, tarmacked and white lined for cyclists and pedestrians. Some hedgerow’s are thick they too could be slimmed to make way for a cycle pedestrian lane.. Cars now are much wider than when these roads were first laid, wider roads..
If people would stop driving these ludicrous “SUVs” it would help a lot. Better to ban them completely.
Staplers Road comes to mind. No pavement at all, on a road with bus stops! Instead just some slippery grass. Could easily turn one side to a sidewalk, other to a cycling lane. And introduce some traffic calming near bus stops: getting out of a bus right onto a slippery grass being passed by speeding cars is NOT a safe experience.
There are far too many vehicles on island roads.
Households should be capped how many vehicles they own.
2 vehicles per household is enough for anyone.
Many persons are still working from Home or can car share
Think Climate.
IW Council is not doing enough for the climate, such a shame a beautiful island
is being polluted.
Just ban cars on the island. No need for them. Get more buses and some trams too.
Oh yeah, there is an island like this in UK already, am I right? Would certainly be a great selling point for active tourism and green living.
People moan about cyclist not using the cycle paths… But if they were half decent and actually maintained properly, people would use them a hell of a lot more. But unfortunately the majority are crap. Flooded, paths coated in thick mud, holes, bumps, made of loose stones rather than concrete/tarmac, littered with hedge clippings and junk that rips your tyres to shreds… Etc. The list goes on. Most people don’t want to take an unreliable, uncomfortable, and sometimes dangerous route when the road offers an easier/smoother journey that’s less likely to cause damage to your bike and cake it in mud (which is saying something considering the state of many of the roads and the way some motorists drive here.)
need to put in speed ramps to slow the twats down
Oh yeah, especially on Staplers Road near Newport, or Old Rd in East Cowes! No pavement whatsoever and cars speeding right next to you is not safe!
I see there are some climate change deniers about still. If we had acted 20 years ago we could avoided all the more extreme measures that these people moan about. They have made it worse by enabling the oil companies to continue destroying the world. Well done, you made it worse. So when the next harsh change comes along that we have to do, it’s because of you! You made it worse!
