Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club have appointed their new club and section captains for the 2018/19 season.
Before handing incoming club captain Neil Hallett his captain’s jacket, outgoing captains Gary Meszynski and Jackie Stephen presented their chosen charity, Challenge & Adventure, with a cheque for £8,096 – the sum raised throughout their year by members.
Once the clubhouse formalities were over, club professional, Peter Hammond, invited all 4 incoming captains to drive and Neil Hallett, Debbie Berry (Ladies’ Captain), John Rich (Senior’s Captain) and Harvey Simpkins (Junior’s Captain) did so admirably.
Members then took to the course for the hotly contested Drive-In Am-Am competition.
Taking the honours in the Men’s section were Neil Bishop, Jim Garriock, Fred Cooper and Alan Allmark with 127 points. Runners up were Chris Cornwell, David Oldham, Bill Foss and Andy Buxton with 121 points.
For the Ladies, the winners were Bev Carroll, Julie Miller, Joyce Petrie and Brenda Keyte on 110 points, with Alix Goddard, Connie Huntington, Jan Easlea and Christine O’Brien in second place with 103 points.
Winners of the Mixed section were Ken Atkinson, Linda Aylott, Alistair Jupe and Lillian Bushby with 109 points (with a better back 9) beating Penny Last, Terry Harris, Pam Darke and Jonathan Darke who also had 109 points.
Nearest the pin on the 9th for the men was won by Brian Calver and, for the ladies, Lillian Bushby.
After the competition the captains invited all members into the clubhouse to enjoy sandwiches and chips, with their compliments. They also unveiled their chosen charity for the coming year – Ability Dogs 4 Young People IOW.
