Another new confirmed case of COVID-19 has been identified on the Isle of Wight – but it’s only the 2nd new case since 14th June and the 5th this month.

The total number of cases of coronavirus locally now sits at 204 – a rise of just 1 from 203. Since the beginning of June, that number has risen by just 5 cases out of a population of over 140,000.

The infection rate is said to be 144.1. This figure is different from the reproduction rate (R), which was previously estimated to be around 0.4 – but is likely to be lower now.

A total of 82 people have now died from the virus – 3 at home, 39 in hospital and 39 in care homes, with 1 death at the hospice. There have been no new deaths since 5th June.

In January I had a chest infection went to my lungs got pneumonia, got over it,I have a low immune system, but I haven’t once locked all the doors and got under the bed, .unlike some. Why haven’t I? Because I’m confident, that this flu like virus hasn’t been inflated to scare everyone, and seems to have worked, but not me. See knowledge is power the more you know about something, the more you can make the right decision. I understand people are scared.but that’s because they are ignorant and don’t understand what they are dealing with, and I don’t mean the flu like virus.

flu-like virus ?
Where is there a flu which infects the brain causing neurological problems, destroys the kidneys and liver, weakens the heart and changes the blood’s physiology ?
Clearly the stoopid shop hasn’t run of out of supplies of stoopid, down your way !

I don’t believe the Echo or anybody else is belittling the virus, it stems from the national press reporting that there are 36 areas where cases are increasing and are at risk of lockdown, the IOW was among those 36 areas.
Many years ago I lived in Hong Kong and visited China frequently, the standard of sanitation, hygiene etc then was appalling, I imagine it has worsened over the years.

My husband and I haven’t been set free yet. Extremely vulnerable people need to be safe before we can leave our house and we’re going mad stuck here. Let us have some time out before lockdown again or life isn’t worth living and in our case we don’t know how much life is left anyway.

Was that 1 person a visitor or a second home owner or an Islander?

Have all the people that have come into contact with that one person been contacted and tested?

Scientific research has suggested that the Isle of Wight could become a major hot spot in the Country for the virus . we have to be careful .

Agree Terry. With all the holidaymakers that are going to flood the island. Will be interesting to see if they stop the visitors coming here and we have to go into lockdown again.

Justice and Anon3. You are both known as Trolls. Both of you post things on here to try and wind others up and to provoke a reaction. You are entitled to your opinion. If you both have elderly relatives, look after them and hope they don’t fall victim to the virus. I would love to tell you both what I think of your comments but it would be removed……it would interesting to know if either of you work and if so, do you come into contact with possible COVID positive people? Or are you both social paracites?

Firstly ,yes I work, I’m 56 yrs old and I am not into trolling ( whatever that maybe) .my comments are a combination of FACTS ,eg masks don’t work, and my own opinions,eg, you are a frightened little sheep. I like you ,am aloud both, sorry if you don’t agreed with the facts ( get researching) or my opinions ,your choice. I don’t agreed with your outlook on this event, but I’m sure your agreed ,that’s why we debate. To get posts removed because you don’t like them ,is one step away from, …… well do I have to say more?

Sounds like the sort of reckless statements that Donald Trump would make, or Boris Johnson before the virus nearly killed him. And if you’re going to shout FACT masks do help prevent the spread of the virus. They may not stop you catching it but if you are unfortunate to become a victim they have been proven to help you from spreading it to other people. Or does that not matter?

Oh and yes I do have elderly parents, mother has have cancer 3 times, father has high blood pressure and on blood thinners, and do they stay in ? No! Been out since this nonsense started. As my mother who’s 78 says, heard it all before, aids was going to kills us ,then bird flu, then pig flu. She has a point!

yeah – I get your logic. Must have been front of the queue in the stoopid shop.

the IOW is a sitting duck. What worked for IOW during the fabled ‘lockdown’ (actually just a few distancing restrictions) in being separate form the mainland, will work against it during holiday season. IOW will become a steaming virus container. this year’s tourist season should be banned for the sake of islanders. But I fear money talks and the population’s welfare is a secondary consideration.

I’m a key worker and can advise you that the virus and it’s threat to our health, young and old, is real.

There are many people with ongoing symptoms after having this virus which we still do not know how long will last.
We can’t hide away forever but need to try and remain vigilant and safe.

Knowledge is power and for some, ignorance appears to be bliss…

John, I’m also a key worker and I can also advise you that believing everything we are told by the government around Covid-19 is utter BS. The care provider I work for have had no cases. But that is because none have been to hospital with other health issues to be labelled as Covid-19. Your name is fitting as you appear to be very gullible indeed. Do some research yourself, it’s so easy to put covid on a death certificate, as when being tested for this it is testing for the common cold symptoms! Which most of us have if we have had a cold etc. I think it’s time to wake up.. if you chose not to that’s fine. As you have a choice for now anyways!

I do chucke when conspiracy theorists say “do some research yourself”. The facts are out there,on the Internet right? I mean, it’s not like every fruitloop in the flat world has infected our greatest source of information yet is it? The government do tell fibs at times but do you seriously think if they had any kind of plan, agenda or secrets that they would leave the truth online for all to see? That’s delusion nal thinking at its best.

That’s the irony of this the agenda 21 , it’s right under people’s noses, and yes they have put it out there, but know most sheep won’t bother checking it out. The agenda is on the gov.uk website for all to see. It I’m wasting my time I feel. I get so frustrated with the fact that ,it’s there ,people just read it!! I’m glad I’m as old as I am, and hopefully be well dead before I see this agenda implemented.

Mrs Brown, with all due respect, I must disagree with your statement.

I do not believe what the government says but also am not one of these idiots who believe Covid is some sort of hoax. Just because you have not witnessed much with your care worker role it is not a sample of the rest of the world. I can assure you that this virus has had huge impact on healthcare systems across the world.

I have done my research and know the Isle of Wight was one of least impacted areas.

Mrs Brown – regardless of cause of death, how to you explain 60,000 excess deaths recently?

I would also like to add that I think you must be rather gullable to believe the above and think I use my real name on here.

Unless you can explain the excess deaths I think I’ll stick to my own research.

BBC and MSM is not research, and if you did do proper research you would know where those so called 60,000 deaths came from, so back in your pen please.

How many times do you have to be told. The ferries have no legal right to stop people travelling .in case you have forgotten the Island is not an independent country with passport control .

I’ve never moaned at lock down as I understood that it was required. I will not moan at everyone being made to ware a mask, because I understand the benefits. I did not moan at restrictions being eased as I understood that the R0 value had dropped below 1.

But I WILL moan at Bob Seely doing what ever it takes to appease his pay masters, bringing loads of virus spreaders here at the cost of the health of his constituents.

They are NOT considering locking us down again!!! Do your research and read the articles properly. We have one of the lowest infection rates in the country with a low R rate. This is just very bad reporting by the likes of Sky News.

The Island gets its income from tourists. If the Island is isolated from the rest the the UK then many people will be jobless, then homeless. We all have to take responsibility for our own health by taking precautions which is quite simple: hand washing, sanitizer, face masks etc. Just don’t think of yourself think of the survival of the Island which already going into decay. You only have to look around and open your eyes. Yes, with holidaymakers coming over there may well be a spike but we can safeguard ourselves. Yes, I am a key worker in care and have lived with the threat of Covid 19

Seems that some comments here suggesting that wearing a tin hat and hiding under the bed really do border on either ignorance or stupidity. No doubt the sort of people, that should they become infected will be pushing their way to the front of the queue for treatment. 2 of my friends (mainland) caught the disease. One of which had the same ignorant outlook. Catching CV 19 totally changed his mind. Ignore the dangers of this disease at your peril. Complacency may not kill you, but you could be the cause of someone else’s death.

I’ve heard this experience from many others too.

I’m not one for a tin foil hat and hiding away but I am one for a well prepared healthcare system, efficient testing, track and tracing in place and a sign that things are being managed in a professional way.

We will need a working app to live with this as it’s the only way to get information on outbreak between strangers. The economy needs to get up and running but not in a shortsighted way risking a second wave which would be devastating.

This should be taken seriously and managed well like other countries which have had a good track record.

We are currently one of the worst hit countries and that should say something. Obviously these numbers will change over the course of the year.

People need to stop trying to say this isn’t a serious matter and numbers are made up. If anything the numbers are lower than what they should be.

This virus will dominate 2020/2021 at least.

If anyone cares to read the ” wide spread ” reporting in the media Including Sky news and yahoo, the IOW and Portsmouth are areas being amongst “36” areas of the Country considered to be ” at risk of Lockdown within days “.

It appears this is not being judged on local infection rates but on the likelihood of a spike , could this be because the Island will be importing many tourists from the mainland within days? Who travel via Portsmouth on Hover, Cat and car ferry.

The balance between LIFE and ECONOMY is becoming a very knife edge predicament.

I hope this will not happen, I think if a lock down were to happen then it may be further into the tourist season.

This disease can incubate for anything from a few days to a few weeks so may take time to grow in numbers.

Luckily the Isle of Wight is a low risk area in terms of geology and there’s not big built up areas and lots of countryside. We didn’t get bit too bad the first time round. Tourist season however will put us at a higher risk, guest houses and B&B could be spreading points.

I think the nation is at high risk of a second wave after busy summer season with a showing of a high number of cases in September/October.

Just imagine people needing to queue outside shops and pharmacies in the winter/flu period? We are much better prepared with procedures, PPE supply networks and social distancing so hopefully this will slow the outbreak enough for testing and tracking to quell it.
