Ventnor Cricket Club suffered a 2 run defeat against Sarisbury Athletic in Saturday’s British Gas Southern Premier League Division One game at Newclose.

Hugh Calloway (3-51), Zeph Wells (3-42) and Dan Cox (2-37) helped the home side work their way through the visitors line up, dismissing them for 238 inside their allotted 50 overs.

The hosts hit early trouble with Ben Duggan, Schaughn van Greunen and James Cheek departing cheaply. Neil Westhorpe (46) and skipper Rob Snell (16) improved matters but at 122-6 the target seemed a way off.

A fine innings of 68 from Hugh Calloway with support from Ben Woodhouse (25) got the innings back on track in a partnership of 65, but with 8 runs needed from the final over, Calloway was caught on the boundary off the first ball. Teenage last wicket pair Zeph Wells and George Willis got their side within 3 runs of victory before Willis was run out to leave their side agonisingly short.

The second team had a day to forget at Steephill in Hampshire League Division One, losing by nine wickets to high riding Longparish who dismissed the home side for 73.

Sunday was a special day for Ventnor Cricket Club with a ceremony to name the Pavilion in memory of John Hilsum, an inspirational and much missed man who served the club so loyally for more than 40 years and whose vision gave the club such a wonderful facility.

The ceremony took place at 13:00 and Club President Sid Owen welcomed Margaret and Ian Hilsum, John’s widow and son, and more than 100 members and non-members to Steephill.

As part of the club’s ‘Ventnor Day’, the ceremony was preceded at 10:00 by matches for young players incorporating the ECB’S All Stars initiative before the senior side welcomed East Meon at 14:00.

The club would like to thank match sponsors Graham and Christine Benson, Rob Snell for co-ordinating the raffle, Ron Cook for all his behind the scenes work and all those who made the day so enjoyable.

Ventnor welcome Langley Manor to Steephill on Sunday 23rd July for a quarter final tie in the British Gas T20 Plate Cup.  The match starts at 15:00.
