The next production from the Cowes Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society (CAODS) is a musical with Lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber The Likes Of Us is a musical in 2 Acts based on the life of Dr Thomas Barnardo and, written in 1965, was one of the early works of this most famous of British musical makers! The story is about Thomas Barnardo, a fiery young medical student who gave up his plans to become a missionary in China when he realised the extent of the desperate homelessness of many children in his own city. This led to the foundation of the famous children’s homes and the organisation that bears his name to this day. The musical is set in mid-Victorian London. Luke Mulhern, who produced the musical for CAODS said:
“This production has presented significant challenges, especially with a cast of over 40, but it has been incredibly rewarding. Bringing a musical back to CAODS has been both exciting and demanding. Upon listening to the music, I was captivated, not only by the recognisable elements from other Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals but also by the inventive compositions of a 17-year-old composer and the whit of the lyrist.”
President of CAODS Dinah Bowman said:
“It is great to have an early summer musical return to Trinity Theatre’s calendar, and in particular “The Likes of Us “which has a poignant message. It tells the story of how Barnado’s homes came into being. It’s fun, but there is a serious message there too. With such superb writers .. it’s one not to miss.”
