A quiet cul-de-sac in Newport is a hive of emergency service activity this morning (Wednesday) as firefighters and paramedics work to rescue a casualty from a height on scaffolding.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are on scene at a property on Berry Close, off Furrlongs, where the rescue of a casualty on some scaffolding is underway.
Pumping appliances from Newport and Ryde, as well as the aerial ladder platform and command unit from Newport, are present, alongside several resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Emergency crews were called to the scene at around 09:15.
Island Echo understands that a worker was taken ill whilst re-tiling a roof. It is unknown as to what injuries have been sustained.
Berry Close is currently blocked due to the number of emergency vehicles in the area.
UPDATE @ 09:50 – A single male casualty – conscious and under his own steam – has been safely removed from the scaffolding. He has been transferred from the rooftop by the aerial ladder and into an ambulance, ahead of onward conveyance to hospital.
Managers from Sovereign Housing Group have arrived to support their colleagues.
UPDATE @ 10:27 – The incident has now drawn to a conclusion with emergecy crews standing down.
The patient has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment.

Get well soon!
We should be very proud of our wonderful and brave emergency services.
True, but they are paid very well to do such jobs.
Bell end
Total overkill to a minor situation
Bit like island Roads
7 operatives watching 1 operative doing the work.
No wonder the country is in financial difficulties and the
Traffic lights at Lake are still not working!
The public sector have it much easier than the private
sector and they receive better pensions and sick pay
perks.
Obviously the Island Fire service have nothing else to do
looks like a scene from Backdraft
Lol
I bet they get “slated” for that.
end
And you know it was minor because?you were there?or part of emergency services?or just a dimwit troll with nothing better to do?answer number 3!!.
Too be honest there are a few too many
emergency services in 1 location at 1 time.
Why does it take five! Emergency vehicles to rescue one man who got down under his own steam!?
Bit overkill if you ask me….
It’s the Isle of Wight
Hope the scaffolding guy is doing ok?
