According to the latest polling, most Islanders are supportive of the green emphasis of most major political parties.
In answer to the question “does the Government spend too much time on green issues?”, it is estimated that 29% of Isle of Wight residents agree, compared with 43% who disagree.
This makes the Isle of Wight the 258th most pro-green constituency out of 632 in England and Wales.
Just 12% of Islanders are estimated to strongly agree that the Government is over-emphasising green issues, 17% mildly agree, 23% mildly disagree and 20% strongly disagree. 28% of residents neither agree nor disagree.
The figures for the Isle of Wight are close to the national average which suggests that in Britain as a whole 42% of the population are in favour of the green agenda as opposed to 30% who are sceptical about green issues, with the remainder undecided.
The Government has committed to decarbonising all sectors of the British economy to achieve net zero by 2050. It has also committed to ban new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 – less than 7 years time.
The data for the polling was collected from 10,009 respondents between 12th and 16th December 2022. The results of the polling and the methodology used can be found at the UnHerd website.
Not if it means 15 minute cities being introduced like those in Oxford and Canterbury and what they are trying to do to the people in Thetford, Norfolk.
Everywhere important on the island already is a 15 minute city. Only weird places like Alverston aren’t.
Yes we have to cut back on carbon, but the government is rushing us into the green agenda using unproven technology. Windmills are a prime example and is why the generating authority was warning about power cuts. The rush to make us use electric cars is another point. Ther is a limited supply of lithium for the batteries and they dont have an effective way of recycling dead batteries yet or a good charging network.
Seriously mate, you think windmills are an unproven technology??? Apart from being around for 100’s of years, the ones for electric generation have been around for decades. It’s proven to work, it proven to be greener than building a power station, it’s proven to be the cheapest power generation technology.
I suppose if you ignore the whole “doesn’t work if it’s too windy or not windy enough”, the high maintenance costs and the large visual impact then yes, I suppose you could argue that they work well.
On the other hand, if you are comparing the visual impact and output levels of a mill like the one at Bembridge with a huge farm of wind turbines that can each approach the height of the Eiffel tower (which is so tall it dominates the Paris skyline), then not so much.
So most people are in favour of having their petrol and diesel cars taken away from them with no viable replacement? (because electric cars will not be available to most and there isn’t enough electricity generation capacity even if they were), they are also in favour of having their gas boilers and gas cookers banned?, they are in favour of having their ability to eat meat deliberately curtailed and their diet restricted further? They are in favour of having no reliable or affordable energy source to power their appliances and in favour of sky high prices because bureaucrats have banned all alternatives ? Are they really all in favour of this ?
No one is, they put these ideas in people’s ahead and then Governments enforce it.
No one ever votes for these things.

i.e. 23% mildly disagree and 20% strongly disagree that the Government spends too much time on green issues…
I wonder if the answers would have been the same if they’d asked “does the Government spend enough time on green issues?”
& how do the results imply a similar feeling towards the other “major political parties”,.. they weren’t even mentioned in the question…

This is from a survey of 10,009 people from across the WHOLE of the UK, not the Isle of Wight. They very probably, given the numbers, never even polled anyone from here.
They use a system called ‘Multilevel Regression with Post-stratification’ which, from Wikipedia, means it’s ‘based on a survey taken across a wider area that includes relatively few people from the locality in question, or where the sample may be highly unrepresentative’.
I don’t know whether people on the Island think ‘The Government spends too much time on green issues’, but I certainly wouldn’t base anything on a survey of just 10,009 people out of a population of something like 67 million and then somehow deduce from that what people on the Isle of Wight think.
Remember solar panels in fields can be dismantled tidal turbines can be dismantled wind turbines can be dismantled if in the future fusion power becomes a reality THE ONLEY WAY IS GREEN
We can also take the coal back out of the atmosphere and then re burn it, making coal the real renewable resource. How do you thing the coal was made in the first place.

I wish the Waste Collection services who collect the waste on a
Weekly basis were more green minded.
They leave behind more mess than what they take away.
Due to other Households not taking care of their waste more carefully
Half of their waste end up in my garden and the morons who take away the waste
don’t remove it.
So it ends up in a council waste bin down the Road.
