Flooding has forced Island Roads to close Sandown’s Morton Common in both directions this lunchtime (Friday). The Environment Agency warned last night that flooding on the main Ryde to Sandown road was likely following 50mm of rainfall in a 48-hour period. With further heavy rainfall seen overnight, the water levels have now risen to an extent where vehicles can no longer safely transit through the area. Island Roads has implemented road closures at the junctions with Avenue Road/Perowne Way and Greenwood Lane. Motorists should divert via Yaverland and Marshcombe Shute until further notice. It is unknown how long the road is likely to remain closed for. What was once a rarity now appears to be a common occurrence, with many blaming the constant flooding of Morton Common on the higher water levels being kept on Brading Marshes.
