The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Eastern Yar tonight (Thursday) as a result of more than 50mm of rainfall being recorded in just a 48-hour period. From 22:00 tonight, water will be ponded on low lying land adjacent to the river throughout the river valley, between Whitwell and Bembridge. Road, cycle track and footpath flooding is expected, which is likely to include Golf Links Road and Morton Common – the main Ryde to Sandown road. At Langbridge and Alverstone, the river will be close to the top of the riverbank but property flooding is not expected. Meanwhile, in Sandown, ditches around Fort Holiday Park will struggle to drain while river levels are high. A separate flood alert is in force for the Isle of Wight coast. Further rain (15-30mm) is forecast over the next 24 hours which means water levels will continue to rise, which could see a more serious flood warning issued. Those who live near the Eastern Yar are being urged to take action now to ensure that you can protect your property.
