Fire crews are tackling a blaze that has destroyed a mobile home on a farm in Alverstone this afternoon (Tuesday). 3 pumping appliances and a water carrier from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are currently on scene at Borthwood Farm, where flames have engulfed a static caravan – sending plumes of smoke into the air. More than 15 firefighters from Southampton, Ryde, Shanklin and Ventnor are working to douse the flames and contain the fire, paying particular attention to a number of gas bottles. The incident began at around 13:30. A cause is currently unknown.
Access has been a particular issue for responding crews due to a road closure on Alverstone Road at Queen Bower for utility works. Furthermore, a road traffic collision on nearby Winford Road has blocked access too. It’s not the first time firefighters have been to the property in recent years. Island Echo has reported on 3 previous incidents at Borthwood Farm in 2017 and 2018.
UPDATE @ 14:43 – A second water carrier from Yarmouth has arrived on scene as crews continue to damp down the affected area. Police are also in attendance.
