Ryde Royals and Shanklin Warriors both played twice in Division 1 this week, with mixed fortunes for both teams in their matches.

They met each other in the first match of the week which ended in a 7-3 victory for Shanklin, with the Royals only winning player being Hugh Idle who won all 3 of his games.

The Royals had better luck against Wroxall A with Wroxall’s Tom Johnson winning 2, the only victories for Wroxall in the match, which ended 8-2 to the Royals.

Shanklin Warriors met Ryde A in their second match of the week, with Shanklin’s Don Hobbs winning 2 games and teammate Michael Bulpitt winning 1, but Ryde’s Scott Lawson made easy work of his games, claiming straight set victories in all 3.  The match ended 6-4 to Ryde, after a thrilling doubles victory by the Shanklin pair.

Newport Vics had a derby match between their A and B teams, and it was the B team who came out on top with the player of the match Vics B’s Dave Newnham who won all 3 although he just scraped through against the A team’s Dave Hilliam in 5 sets.  The match ended 6-4 to Vics B.

Hugh Idle continues to head the players’ averages with no losses so far, and his team Ryde Royals now head the table by 2 points over Ryde A.

In Division 2 there were no close matches, with the top 3 teams all winning comfortably.

Havenstreet Locos head the table with a 5 point lead over Shanklin Skuas in 2nd place, whilst Ryde Relics are 3rd.  The Relics Glenn Morley is unbeaten at the top of the players’ averages, closely followed by teammate Graham Evans.

In Division 3m there was only 1 match played which proved a close 1 between the older and younger generation.

Ryde Rustics met Ryde Rookies, with the legendary 90-year-old Bert Paice of the Rustics playing young Rookie Ryan Cates in a repeat of their meeting earlier in the season. That was Cates only defeat in the league so far, but this time he got the better of Paice with a 4 set victory. The match ended in a draw, after the Rustics won the doubles and they are now on equal points with Newport Vics C at the top of the table.
