MEN’S RINK LEAD FROM THE OUTSET IN THE OVER 60’S NATIONAL DOUBLE


In the 2nd round of the Men’s National Over 60’s Double Rink the Isle of Wight Indoor Bowls Club took on Chawton Park from Alton.

The rink playing at home of Alan Cawdell, Brian Taplin, Ron Leleux and Bob Mortlock took on the rink skipped by Geoff Robinson. Leading from the outset the Island quartet never looked back and finished comprehensive winners by 19 shots to 7.

The rink playing away of Richard Jeffery, John Attrill, Peter Furmidge and Ian Morey made a good start and led by 6 shots to 0. The home four skipped by John Kellow came back strongly. They went on to record a 18 shots to 15 win with Morey on the last 2 ends playing vital woods to keep his side’s deficit to a minimum.

In the next round on 10th December, at 10:00, they will play Victory. The team remains unchanged.

This season’s National Championships are in the early stages across a variety of competitions. There are still plenty of rounds for competitors to play to qualify for the National finals.

In the Men’s Pairs, Darren Griffith and Jack Berry progressed to the next round by winning away by 18 shots to 6 against M. Asher’s duo, but Bill and Allen Best did not do sowell  as they were defeated at home by 24 shots to 6 by J. Garner’s pair.

In the Men’s triples, there were successes for the trios of Alan Cawdell, Darren Griffith and Jack Berry and also for Ryan Trigg, Paul Attrill and Allen Best. The former went through with an easy 26 shots to 5 home win over Gary Snook’s triples from Victory and the latter recorded a comfortable home win by 24 shots to 11 against Geoff Johnson’s triple from Chawton Park.

In the Men’s Fours, Alan Cawdell, Paul Dickinson. Darren Griffith and Jack Berry played away against Snook’s quartet. It was a close match until the final stages when the Island rink took command and finished with a 16 shots to 9 victory.

In the Men’s Singles, Griffith playing away from home took on Chris Daniels of Bournemouth. It was the home player who progressed into the next round by 21 shots to 13.

Meanwhile, in the Ladies’ National Singles, Anne Bernard went through to the next round with a 21 shots to 15 home win over J. Williamson.

The Ladies ‘A’ and ‘B’ play their 2nd round matches in the Mason Trophy on 6th December at 12 noon. The ‘A’ team take on Dolphin. The home rink is Gay Allen, Shirley Searle, Moira Steven and Pauline Proud, the away four being Annie Morris, Steff Ball, Barbara Sleap and Maggie Lawley.  The ‘B’ side play Bournemouth.  The home quartet is Phyl Fredericks, Barbara Moye, Ann Hoath and Sue Green with the away rink being Trish McMurray, Jane KIlby, Carol Jones and Shirley Stubbs.
