UPDATED: The body of a man aged in his 40s has been recovered by Yarmouth RNLI around 12 miles south of The Needles this afternoon (Wednesday).
Solent Coastguard requested the launch of Yarmouth RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat at just gone 13:30 and within an hour the volunteer crew had located the remains floating in the water.
Police have met with the lifeboat at Yarmouth Harbour, where the man’s body has been transferred to an awaiting private ambulance and on wards to the mortuary at St Mary’s Hospital.
Island Echo understands the body may have been in the water for up to 2 weeks.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has said:
“The death is being treated as unexplained.
“Identification procedures are on-going and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”
UPDATE THURSDAY – The family of 61-year-old Hugh Cox from Dorset have been informed of the discovery, although formal identification is yet to take place.
Mr Cox went missing on Tuesday 20th June and has not been seen since.
Dorset Police and Hampshire Constabulary are jointly working on the case.
