Armed Police have taken up position surrounding a property on a quiet residential street in the Haylands area of Ryde tonight (Thursday) following reports of a man armed with a sword.
It was at around 19:30 that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary first arrived at Meadow View Close, off Bettesworth Road, in response to an alarming call received at the Force Control Room.
Now, a van load of specialist armed response officers have arrived from the mainland – after being whizzed across the Solent from Portsmouth to Ryde – to assist local armed officers in containing the threat and bringing the situation to a peaceful conclusion.
Island Echo understands a female – who ‘barricaded’ herself inside her property – has been hurried away from the scene and is with response officers nearby.
Armed Police continue to manage the ongoing situation further up the road.
UPDATE @ 21:20 – 1 male has voluntarily given himself up and has been escorted from the property and into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, bringing the volatile situation to an end.
He is being taken to St Mary’s Hospital for further treatment and assessment, accompanied by several officers.
Police are now standing down.
It is the second incident of the day that has required the attendance of Armed Police from both sides of the Solent. This afternoon, a man in his 80s was arrested after allegedly being seen in possession of a firearm in Luccombe.
UPDATE FRIDAY – A 23-year-old man arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and common assault has been bailed until July.

The island is becoming a dangerous place,
where the fcuk are people getting these weapons
from.
I am thinking of emigrating to the mainland,
thesedays there are too many Numpty’s on the
island, it is not the island it use to be.
Going to the mainland. Perhaps you should read the online newspapers in Pompey and Soton, they paint an identical picture to the situation here.
Anti social media is to blame, tv soaps give the wrong message, mean and greedy, and violence seem to be the norm.
I could go on.
Sad times.
I was thinking of heading in the direction
of Devon, there are some peaceful quaint
villages that are still numpty free in 2025
Things are not getting any better on the
Island, especially if they build more and
more new homes.
Care to name any quaint peaceful and numpty- free villages in Devon or elsewhere in the UK, EIE? Thought not. And, of course, if you found and emigrated to one it would no longer qualify for that definition…
It would, I would be escaping numpty’s
like yourself.
