A man who called Police stating he intended to harm himself before then threatening to stab anyone who came near him, which resulted in a stand-off situation with officers, has been handed a 15-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
It was on 18th November last year that Wayne Paulson, 29, of Staplers Road in Newport, called Hampshire Constabulary and made threats down the phone, the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court heard this week.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, explained to the court that Paulson had made clear his intentions to kill himself and stab anyone who came near him. Police soon attended Paulson’s address in full body armour and as they approached his door they could see he was holding a large kitchen knife, which he pointed at officers.
After a short stand-off, Police managed to talk Wayne down. However, as he left the property he was shouting and swearing at officers in front of members of the public.
Paulson was originally arrested on suspicion of threats to kill and affray, but was later charged with 2 counts of using threatening/abuse/insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress and 1 count of sending an obscene/malicious communication – charges to which he pleaded guilty to on Tuesday (15th March).
Probation explained to the bench that Paulson had struggled with the loss of his father and had no other family around him. They stated that Paulson’s engagement was poor and that he still posed a high risk of harm.
Defending, Mr James Osborne said that his client couldn’t remember anything about the incident but would never have stabbed the officers. Mr Osborne said that Paulson is struggling financially as he is unable to get any money out of his late father’s Trust.
Magistrates handed Wayne Paulson a 15-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered him to complete 20 rehabilitation days. They also ordered that he pay costs of £85 with a £128 surcharge.

Time to get rid of these creatures….
What is the point of the courts who keep on handing down light sentencing.
I thiught anyone with a knife automatically got 5 yrs, wasnt that what gov said few yrs ago?
Bloody Theresa May. Total waste of space that woman was. Conservatives really haven’t got a handle on what’s going on in this country. The laws needs changing so the soft sentencing is done away with and deterrents are handed down to reflect the crime. Knives, drugs, drunk driving, drug driving, violence, antisocial behaviour all need tougher sentences. Way too soft these suspended sentences.
Bloody nutter. What has gone wrong with some people. If they don’t value their own lives, leave other people alone. Life is precious.
