A man is being treated in hospital following a crash in Shide, Newport during the early hours of this morning (Tuesday).
Emergency services were called to the scene at 02:23 after an uninsured, untaxed Mercedes A-Class crashed into a number of bollards and a wall.
The vehicle came to a stop side-on in the middle of the carriageway, blocking the road in both directions.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were called to check over the male driver, who was then conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital with what Police are describing as ‘major injuries’.
Island Echo understands the male sustained arm injuries.
Although no arrests have been made, Police are conducting further investigations.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary has told Island Echo:
“We can confirm that we were called out to an incident at 2.23am this morning (28 July) following a single-vehicle collision on Shide Road, Newport.
“A Mercedes veered into a concrete bollards on either side of the road.
“A man was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital with major injuries. No arrests have been made at this stage, pending further investigation”.

Should have been taken to Parkhurst prison hospital immediately, not St Mary’s.
You’re too late mate – they closed it 20 years ago 🙂
Couldn’t have happened to a more deserving chap. Could have so easily done the same, or worse to a truly innocent driver. Let’s hope it hurts.
Name and shame the idiot
Shove your pig headed comments up your arse
if you don’t know the full story don’t comment!! learn some respect
Good, got that one off the road. (Hope it wasn’t someone else’s car) I trust the bill for bollards etc is already in preparation
What goes around comes around!
Throw the book at him. Should’ve left him to make his own way
Day after day single vehicle ‘accidents’, no tax insurance etc etc, just what kind of low life is taking over this Island. Then vehicles being broken into in Binstead by a 16 year old on the same night.
This Island really is going down by the day. We really need a taskforce set up to deal with this never ending situation. Drugs, knives, lawless driving, the list goes on.
This is an enclosed area on the Island, we are living with a growing menace in a small area, not an inner city where low life can easily move in and out in a car at will. The solent not only keeps scum out it also keeps it in !!!!!!!!
Wait until Penny Feathers is filled with the wonderous low life, will make the home grown scum look like choir boys.
When are the Government going to make modified cars illegal that will stop a few chavs ?
A change in the law would be useful with respect to insurance ( not helful in this case)….If you cause an accident or just damage your own car due AND are convicted of drink/drug driving, then the insurance co should refuse to pay out on your own direct losses. i.e. your crashed car either stays crashed, or the driver pays for teh damage himself to get it back on the road. Of course, third party damage should continue to be covered. In this case, assuming the driver owned the car, then it’s only resting place will be the scrap yard. Mid you, he might get £500 for the scrap. That will buy him a beat up 20yr old car with 3 month’s MOT….
No insurance and no tax ohh and no arrest, no wonder they do it.
