UPDATED: A man is recovering in hospital tonight (Saturday) after being knocked unconscious in a vicious attack in Cowes.
Up to 8 Police units responded to the incident on the High Street at the junction with Sun Hill at just before 18:30, when a man was seriously assaulted in broad daylight by a group of men.
According to eye witnesses, the victim and his female friend were involved in an altercation with a group which turned violent when they started punching both the man and woman.
After being thrown against the wall and hit several times, the female then witnessed her boyfriend being knocked to the ground and kicked, rendering him unconscious.
A rapid response paramedic and an ambulance crew from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service responded to the scene alongside Police after members of the public called in the terrifying situation.
The attackers fled the scene.
Investigations are now underway to identify those responsible. The victim’s condition is currently unknown.
UPDATE MONDAY – An appeal for information has been launched by Police to identify those involved in Saturday’s attack, who are said to have made off from the scene up Sun Hill.
The unnamed victim has been discharged from hospital suffering from a fracture facial bone.
