UPDATED: Police have this evening (Tuesday) carried out a search of Ryde after the town’s Union Street Subway store was ‘robbed at knife point’, according to unconfirmed reports.
Officers responded to Union Street and the Esplanade at shortly after 18:30 following a 999 call, reporting what is understood to be a robbery at the takeaway establishment at the bottom of Ryde’s main shopping area.
At least 6 Police cars and vans – including a dog unit – circled the vicinity for over 45 minutes, checking nearby beaches and parks and taking statements from staff members involved in the incident.
It is currently unknown if a suspect has been identified or apprehended following the search, which included as far along as Appley.
Hampshire Constabulary are yet to issue a statement on the matter.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY – Police have confirmed that an investigation has been launched after a man entered Subway on Union Street at around 18:40 yesterday evening before robbing the store at knife point.
The unknown male is said to have brandished a knife and demanded that staff hand over money from the tills, which they did. The suspect then made off.
The wanted man is described as white, 6ft 2inches tall with light brown hair. He was wearing glasses and a brown baseball cap.
