A Newport man who overtook an unmarked Police car before speeding beyond 70mph in a 40mph zone was under the influence of cocaine at the time, a court has heard.
Robert Godley, 42, of Manor Crescent in Newport appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday (6th October) charged with 2x counts of drug driving.
Prosecuting, Lauren Stone, told the court that on the evening of the 27th March at around 23:30 Police noticed a car being driven behind them, the vehicle swerving in the road crossing the white lines.
As the road turns from a 30mph zone into a 40mph zone, Godley driving his Vauxhall Zafira, zoomed past the unmarked Police car accelerating to beyond 70mph.
Just up the road, Godley was pulled over where a roadside drug wipe was conducted. This returned a positive reading for cocaine.
Having been arrested and taken to Newport Police Station, blood tests were carried out which returned over-the-limit readings for Cocaine and Benzoylecgonine.
Godley is currently subject to a community order of which he has completed just 2.5 of the outstanding 250 hours of unpaid work.
Defending, Michael McGoldrick, said that Godley was going through a difficult time in his personal life at the time and that he doesn’t have an issue with cocaine.
The case was adjourned until the 27th October so allow a pre-sentence report be compiled. The father-of-4 was handed an interim driving ban in the meantime.

Ha Ha! What a d*ck head. You weren’t expecting that were you. No sympathy for drug driving and speeding. People like you kill innocent people. You deserve all you get.
There’s not that many people in the middle of the road at midnight I was fine driving i had 1 line of bash rubbish that’s why it was 2 counts because I got charged for the mixing agent aswell which is benzocaine. I did my ban like a man and was a bus wanker. I know I was wrong but I think I handled losing my family of 18 years rather well. Like to see u cope with it better. Him without sin cast the 1st stone.
If you can afford cocaine then you should not be allowed any benefits, reduced rent, council tax , or tax credits, as those on such are allegedly on the poverty line.
Yet would be interesting if courts made public the full household income and essential rent/ C.T that ALL offenders pay (or don’t ).
Then & only then perhaps fools would stop donating food and charity to such ‘poverty stricken’ beings
Spot on, why are the DWP paying out all these smack rats free handouts, as well as everything else for free, when a workman can’t afford a pot to piss in. The courts should give details to the DWP on how their money is being blown by these low life, and should they make investigations. They are quick enough to make cuts to the disabled and the pensioners but never a question asked as to why the poncing free loaders are paid so much to blow on snort/smack/piss. It’s about time some priorities and principles were brought into line. Who needs to work for it when the DWP gives it for free? They don’t want to pay for kids school meals, but they can give it away to a waste of space smack head.
I suppose you’d like to see a ‘social credit’ system brought in like they have in communist China? In fact, why not just bring back the stocks and pillories too, eh?
just anther day on the the drug haven you call the isle of Wight
If you hate it so much why do you keep commenting about it? Save your comments for the mainland
‘a difficult time in his personal life at the time and that he doesn’t have an issue with cocaine.’ means I do coke every day and I like it.
Think the solicitor needs to turn the page on his book of excuses as thats the statement every time a drug or drink driver has been in court in the last two years or more.
Need more unmarked police cars and bikes. When I drive home after work after a late shift, around 11pm, I see many pissed or stoned drivers.
Just a thought when was the last time a property was raided for drugs on the island
The bloke is constantly getting into trouble
Sure saw this car come up on Facebook s few times for bad driving.
Get the loser a rope… wasting are fresh air, could have killed someone. Not good
Great work guys and hopefully another idiot drug user will be off our roads soon.
The only way to catch drink or drug drivers, speeding motorists etc
is for plod to patrol around in all unmarked vehicles
just like the councils Enforcement Officers who drive around
incognito in plain unmarked cars.
We need to get all Numpty’s off Island Roads
Love those unmarked Police cars!!!! Serves people right !!!!! No sympathy WHATSOEVER.
