A 59-year-old man charged with arson following a fire at a property in Sandown last weekend is to appear in the Crown Court early next year.
Andrew Turner, of Beachfield Road, was arrested on Saturday after a fire broke out at a detached property – thought to be where he lives – shortly before 09:00.
As first reported by Island Echo, 5 fire appliances from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to a residential property. Wholetime and retained crews used breathing apparatus, main jets and hose reel jets to bring the incident under control and fully extinguish the blaze, which caused significant damage to the house.
Turner was subsequently charged with arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered, as well as possession of a bladed article. He was remanded in custody to appear before Magistrates in Portsmouth on Monday.
It was at this court appearance earlier in the week that the case was sent up to the Crown Court, where Turner will now appear for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 3rd January 2023.
He has been remanded in custody until that time.

This guy must have mental health issues. Custody is the best and safest place for him.
Hope he gets the help he so obviously needs.
Why ‘must’ he have mental health issues?
Obvious you think it is okay to try to burn a house down, intentionally, plus to carry a bladed weapon ? If that is normal in your mind, then maybe you need mental help also.
It’s just that whenever someone commits a crime nowadays the mental health issues card gets played, as if the perp is somehow a victim we should feel sorry for. Was it his house? Did he live with anyone else? Is the other person ok?
Surely not the ex MP? He seemed a decent chap.
Did he……………………………………………………………….?
another tory losing the plot!
Probably couldn’t afford to put the heating on
