MALICIOUS FIRE SENDS BLACK SMOKE BILLOWING ACROSS NEWPORT

img_8718The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have extinguished what is thought to be a malicious fire in the grounds of the Isle of Wight College this afternoon (Sunday). 

2 appliances from Newport Fire Station were called to reports of black smoke billowing across the town at shortly before 16:10.

Crews headed towards Ken Bloomfield Removals off Manner’s View however soon confirmed the fire was actually located behind a row of trees on college land.

3 hose reels have been used to extinguish the blaze, which had engulfed a pile of debris and caught several trees.

Police have been called to the scene as firefighters believed the fire probably has malicious cause, although there is no obvious signs of an accelerant being used.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are preparing to return to station.
