ambulancenightA male is recovering in hospital today (Saturday) after being viciously attacked in Ryde overnight, sustaining what has been described as serious head injuries. 

Police were called to Union Street in the town at around midnight following reports of a serious assault near to the Esplanade.

According to eye witnesses, the victim was hit with a bottle around the head before falling to the ground in the middle of the road when he then sustained further blows from being stomped on.

Several males are reported to have pursued the attacker – believed to be a male in his mid to late 20s – towards the top of Union Street before he was arrested and detained by Police.

The road was temporarily blocked to allow paramedics to treat the injured man before conveying him to St Mary’s Hospital, resulting in some minor delays to Southern Vectis buses.

Investigations continue.
