Islanders planning trips to and from the mainland over the festive period are being warned to expect major disruption, with a key section of the M27 due to close for 12 days between Christmas and New Year.
The motorway will be shut in both directions between Junction 9 for Whiteley and Junction 11 for Fareham from 20:00 on Christmas Eve (24th December) until 04:00 on Saturday (4th January).
The closure is to allow for the installation of a huge 8,500-tonne concrete underpass near Junction 10, as part of improvement works linked to the new Welborne Garden Village development.
The project, led by Hampshire County Council, involves excavating the motorway embankment before a pre-built, 4-lane underpass is slid into place and the road rebuilt above it.
A signed diversion route will be in place along the A27, but drivers are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys, particularly those heading to or from Portsmouth and Southampton for ferry connections to the Isle of Wight.

i hope they are installing speed bumps
If it slows down the boy racers, I’ll personally polish every bump myself.
Let the train take the strain in such conditions.
