UPDATED: The main road into St Helens has been closed for emergency carriageway repairs after the road began to crumble on Saturday evening.
Following a significant downpour of rain at around dinnertime, the road resurface lifted and what has been described as sewage and waste water began gushing down the road.
In order for the situation to be resolved, an emergency road closure has been put in place meaning motorists are now unable to enter the village from Carpenters Road. The closure is between Station Road and St Michaels Road.
Motorists are advised to divert via Nettlestone or Bembridge.
UPDATE @ 16:14 – Island Roads have confirmed that tonight’s resurfacing of Sandown Road, Bembridge will continue as planned. As a result, the only access to and from Bembridge and St Helens overnight (from 19:30) is via Nettlestone.
Southern Water anticipate they will complete their works by Wednesday, so this extended diversion will be in place both tonight (Monday) and tomorrow evening (Tuesday).
The only hope for locals to avoid a 10-mile diversion is it the resurfacing works are cancelled due to the weather conditions.
