A driver has escaped serious injury this morning (Saturday) after a tree smashed down onto their moving car on the outskirts of Newport.
It was at 11:00 that emergency services were called to Middle Road, on the Carisbrooke boundary, to reports of a driver trapped in their Honda Civic.
A critical care paramedic, ambulance crew and operational commander from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were deployed, alongside resources from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, as well as Police.
The 999 call came after a tree on the edge of the carriageway fell into the road and onto the vehicle, smashing the windscreen and damaging the roof. The car was travelling towards Newport at the time.
Amazingly, the occupants of the car have escaped any serious injury, but have been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for further checks.
The road was blocked for a time, but thanks to the swift actions of firefighters, the tree and associated debris has been cleared.
Calbourne (Middle) Road has now reopened in both directions.
I don’t know why the council allow trees to grow over roads..
Health and safety on the island leaves little to the
imagination.
People with trees on their land (whether they are the local authority or private landowners) really need to monitor their condition and ensure that unsafe trees are attended to. Thank heavens no one was seriously injured.
Quite agree. All trees next to major roads should be regularly inspected. It’s not rocket science. I hope this motorist sues the landowner.
