Division 1’s match of the week between Newport Vics A and Ryde Royals proved to be an exciting one full of long rallies, quality defence and attacking play from all those taking part.
Newport’s Dave Hilliam was in great form, beating Ryde’s Ricky Lock and Conal Howells in 4 sets each, but could not get the better of young Hugh Idle. Idle won all his matches with ease in straight sets.
Paul Freeborn for Newport was the unluckiest player of the night, taking Lock and Howells to 5 sets but losing out both times. In the doubles, though, Freeborn had his revenge with team mate Hilliam in a brilliant five set victory over Idle and Lock, and the match ended 6-4 to Ryde.

Second placed Havenstreet Locos kept up the pressure on Newport with a 9-1 victory against Newport Vics D, but Newport’s Sam Pascoe scored a well deserved victory over Mike Lee.
