Reports of a boat taking on water off the Isle of Wight, with 18 souls on board in danger, led to the launch of 3 lifeboats this morning (Tuesday).
Solent Coastguard requested the launch of Bembridge RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat, Selsey RNLI’s All Weather Lifeboat and Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat at 10:31.
It came following an emergency call from the 33m Queen Galadriel, a Baltic Trader located some 7.5 miles off St Catherine’s Point. The vessel had reported taking on water.
With a total of 18 people on board, including 13 children, the decision was taken to send 3 lifeboats to the scene.
Bembridge’s Tamar-class lifeboat arrived first and evacuated the 13 children and 2 adults, leaving just the 3 crew members onboard. They have since been transferred ashore at Portsmouth.
Selsey’s Shannon-class lifeboat is now escorting the casualty vessel into the safe haven of Gosport Marina, with assistance from Bembridge Lifeboat.
Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat, which was also involved in the operation, was recovered back to station by 12:25.
