UPDATED: Motorists are being advised to avoid The Downs this evening (Thursday) due to the closure of The Downs Road following a three vehicle road traffic collision.
A Ford Transit, Renault Twingo and Nissan Qashqai have been involved in a shunt at the junction with Newport Shute.
Emergency services, including Police and paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, were called to the incident at just before 17:00
Traffic is tailed back in both directions, not helped by the closure of Arreton – the main road between Sandown and Newport.
UPDATE @ 18:00 – Firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are currently extricating one person from the Nissan Qashqai by cutting the roof of the vehicle away.
The road remains closed in both directions.
UPDATE @ 21:00 – The road has reopened in both directions following the recovery of all three vehicles involved.
One woman has been taken to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance after being freed by fire crews.
