A large bonfire that could be seen for miles around has been extinguished by firefighters on the outskirts of Ryde tonight (Saturday).
It was just before 21:25 that Islanders started reporting seeing a large fire in the vicinity of Upton, on the southern edge of Ryde.
An orange glow from the flames could be seen from a significant distance due to the bonfire’s location on high ground off Gatehouse Lane. Smoke was also billowing across the road.
The situation led to 1 appliance from Ryde being mobilised to the scene, with firefighters working to douse the flames and fully extinguish the smouldering debris.
Water has been pulled from a nearby hydrant, which may result in a loss of pressure or discolouration for nearby properties.

I hope the person having the bonfire will be charged for the cost of the Fire Brigade attending. What sort of moron has a bonfire when everywhere is tinder dry? We are all being urged to save water any no doubt many gallons will have had to have been drawn off the hydrant to put this out.
