Having reached the last 16 of the Yetton Plate National Competition, the Ladies of the Isle of Wight Indoor Bowls Club faced the Ladies team from the Horsham Indoor Bowls Club on 5th January.

The Islanders got off to a bright start and led by 21 shots to 15 at the 5 end stage of the match, with the home rink of Phyl Fredericks, Sandra Adkins, Ann Hoath and Sue Green leading the way with a 12 shot advantage against Ann Frecknall’s rink.

By the halfway point the Island club had increased their overall advantage to 40 shots to 29 and the team looked well on their way to a Quarter Final place. From that point on the opposition came back strongly. At the three quarter stage they had taken a 2 shot overall lead. They were never headed and won the match 74 shots to 68.

Green’s quartet were dominant in the first half of the game and were ahead by 18 shots. The second half was a total reversal of fortunes with the visitors scoring on 9 of the 11 ends to reduce the final deficit to only 6 shots. The other home 4 of Ronnie Berry, Auriol Ash, Peggy Evans and Pauline Proud played the rink skipped by Joyce Reynolds.

The away team held a slight lead throughout to take a 5 shot win by 17 to 12. The away 4 of  Margaret Carrett, Jane Kilby, Barbara Sleep and Anne Bernard put up a good performance. They led by a small margin for most of the game against Monica Hargreve’s 4 but were pegged back at the end of the match which ended 16 all.

The other away 4 of Annie Morris, Stef Ball, Shirley Stubbs and Gay Allen trailed throughout but finished the game well to reduce the final deficit to 6 shots to lose by 17 shots to 23.

Gay Allen and Jack Berry won their way through to the area semi final of the National Mixed Pairs by defeating Lynne Maple and Bill Jackson from the Palmerston Club from Fareham. They played well, as did Jackson, but Maple struggled and persisted to play a difficult hand on the rink on which the game took place.
