The Isle of Wight Bowls Club Ladies progressed to the 3rd round of the National Yetton Plate competition when they had a good 12 shot win against Atherley of Southampton.
The match was close throughout but it was the Island side who finished the strongest to achieve success.
Playing away the rink of Jane Kilby, Trish McMurray, Carol Jones and Anne Bernard dominated from the outset to record an excellent 23 shots to 7 win against S Herring’s four. The other away rink of Annie Morris, Steff Ball, Shirley Stubbs and Gay Allen also did well in only going down to a narrow 21 shots to 18 deficit against M. Darkin’s quartet.
Playing at home the rink of Ronnie Berry, Auriol Ash, Janet Ince and Pauline Proud trailed in the first half of their game against G Hayes’ four, but they came back very well and dominated the remainder of the game to record a vital 23 shots to 14 win. The other home quartet of Phyl Fredericks, Sandra Adkins, Anne Hoath and Sue Green played J Williason’s four. The game was close for a long period but the visitors finished the strongest to win 21 shots to 11.
The next round game is against Loddon Vale of Basingstoke on Saturday 8th December.
In the 3rd round of the Denny Cup the Isle of Wight Men’s side took on Victory of Portsmouth who had reached the semi final last season.
The match was close up to the half way stage when Victory took control to win by 79 shots to 68. The Island’s only winning rink was that of Simon New, Bertie Everson, Darren Griffith and Alan Cawdell who edged home 16 shots to 15 against John Biggs’ four. The other home rink of Andrew Nightingale, Richard Jeffery, Ian Morey and Bob Mortlock disappointingly went down by 24 shots to 16 against D. Smith’s quartet.
The 2 rinks playing away both performed well. Each of the rinks were engaged in close matches against strong opposition. Paul Attrill, Ryan Trigg, Allen Best and Jack Berry only lost by a single shot to B Stark’s rink. The four of John Pearce, Ian Ball, Peter Furmidge and Ron Leleux took on C Thresher’s quartet in which the home side recorded a 20 shot to 17 success.
In other news… Paul Attrill and Bertie Everson won their 1st round match in the Men’s National Pairs.
The duo travelled to the Victory club where they recorded a win against Gary and Adrian Snoot. It was a close game throughout. Approaching the halfway stage the Islanders took a narrow advantage. In a low scoring game they maintained their lead to win by 17 shots to 14.
On Tuesday 27th November at 13:00 the 2nd round of the Men’s Over 60’s Double Rink takes place against Victory ‘B’. The team selected is HOME John Pearce, Richard Jeffery, Ian Morey and Bob Mortlock, AWAY John Wilkins, Phil Brooks, Peter Furmidge and Ron Leleux.
