A staggering 21,500 parking tickets were issued on the Isle of Wight in 12 months between 2021 and 2022, new data has revealed.
Figures released by the Isle of Wight Council, in its annual parking report, show 1 in 4 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) issued between 1st April 2021 and 31st March 2022 were for parking in a car park without paying. It was the most frequent parking restriction infringement, with a total of 5,710 fines issued.
Nearly 2,298 people were ticketed for the same offence on-street.
More than 3,970 were given out for parking in a restricted street during the prescribed hours and the 3rd highest reason was parking for longer than permitted in on-street spaces, with 3,559 tickets issued.
Other tickets were issued for parking in an electric vehicle charging space without charging their car (3); parked with the engine running where it was prohibited (1) and parking in a car park when it was closed (6).
During the 12 months, a total of 21,595 PCNs were issued by the council’s civil enforcement officers.
In its report, the council said in a perfect world it would not have to issue PCNs but this would only happen if drivers complied with parking and traffic regulations, road signs and time limits. It says the benefits of complying allow for improved road safety, better vehicle movements and clearer access for pedestrians and individuals.
Other contraventions include:
- Parked after the expiry of paid for time in a car park – 885 PCNs
- Parked beyond the bay markings in a car park – 276 PCNs
- Parked in a car park or area not designated for that class of vehicle – 210 PCNs
- Stopped on a pedestrian crossing or area marked by zig-zags – 62 PCNs
- Parked causing an obstruction in a car park – 11 PCNs
- Parked in a restricted area in a car park – 26 PCNs
- Stopped in a restricted area outside a school when prohibited – 26 PCNs
- Stopped in a restricted bus stop or stand – 91 PCNs
- Parked on a taxi rank – 104 PCNs
- Parked in a designated disabled person’s on-street parking place without displaying a valid disabled person’s badge – 404 PCNs
- Parked in a loading place during restricted hours without loading – 472 PCNs
- Parked in a permit space or zone without a valid permit – 1, 222 PCNs

Yet still they park on double yellow lines near me.. ad also around the corner from me.. do people not realise that they shou8ld not park on/by double yellow lines???
IW Council does not understand the Highway Code.themselves.
They should employ a few tow trucks to drive round the Island and
Tow away any vehicles that are parked on Pavements or Double Yellow lines etc.
They would generate millions, therefore not having to raise council taxes.
Also Council Tax should be based on the number of vehicles an Household owns.
Many Households have 2, 3 or even 4 vehicles parked along many Island Roads and Streets.
Households with only 1 vehicle sometimes have difficulty parking due to this.
Why should an Household with 1 vehicle pay the same Council Tax!
Yet IW Council don’t give a **** about people parking on Pavements.
Council is run by idiots.
Health and safety is Non existent on the Island.
And how many of those tickets were actually paid?
The Loading bay in Regent Street Shanklin is permanently full with vehicles,
Very dangerous when turning into Regent Street.
obviously the Council G’estapo cars do not drive down Regent Street.
How about stopping vehicles driving into the NO right turn road in Brading off of the
High street.
How about stopping vehicles driving into the NO right turn road in Brading off of the
High street……thats a police issue not a council job… if you catch em on dash cam send it in to the police
In many parts of the country the Police would be parked in the Road so when a
Vehicle drives round they have them red handed.
This Council would rather pay the Police more Council Tax Money than letting them earn it themselves.
More for the Council pension pot !!!!!!
And also pay for the non floating bridge and the Jenny ….
Nothing for the cash cow’s …..
Same old story!!!!!!
Hmmm but how much money did they get? FOI needed for that?
Does this mean we won’t have our Council Tax bill increased this year then?
Well, sounds like the number of fines issued, the Council must be well in pocket?!?!?!?
now i’ll back the parking wardens going on strike lol
Nice little guaranteed easy box for them eh?
Pure greed and smirking at motorists misfortune
I wonder what they are going to blow all the money on? Not us, that’s for sure
Ah well, if nobody received a parking ticket for the year just imagine what the council tax increase would be along with increased parking charges etc etc, There are always questionable parking fines for example a minute or two past the time, (VERY ANNNOYING), but don’t break the rules and you won’t get a fine. However by breaking the rules you keep other charges down, either way somebody pays one way or other.
Tiny percentage of those fined have improved road safety, as well as turning an easy profit how about also targeting illegal nuisance parking? ie on the streets where we all live..
Everybody should be using electric cars by now so you should all be charged taxation for the damage your big SUVs are causing to the environment. The air in London is cleaner like I cant actually breathe sometimes, all those fumes like just look at the vegetation along fairlee, they all black wilting. So I have no sympathy for any drivers.
I assume sanguinius that you have the solution to the lack of minerals available to make the batteries for the cars then. After all, devastating environmental destruction takes place in other countries, to obtain the minerals to make the batteries.
there is also the issue that there simply isn’t enough of the required minerals to make the amount of batteries required – then there is the fact that those batteries are not really recycled yet either, after they are no longer usable.
cant say i like petrol/disesel, however, there are many hurdles to overcome before we can have the air quality we want.
also – CO2 is what plant life need to survive – we cannot remove too much of it or they all die.
These low lives gave me a ticket despite one machine which is always broken in Lugley Street car park. I am new to the island, got the free 1 hour ticket whilst going for interview with WP recruitment. I asked to pause the interview, went online to use the pay as you park app, and bought a ticket. (only 37 minutes into the
free hour….as I knew it may go over the free time allowed. I was back home with 23 minutes still to run on the app and evidenced this to the greedy parasites that seem to be ripping off everyone – even unemployed jobseekers. I sent off the appeal with the screen shot of the app payment – as I am honest and was not seeking to dodge the payment, but as suspected the disgusting corrupt council still want £50.If they still want the 50 quid sue them, if you have evidence then you should be laughing not in fear on here complaining or are you just laughing because I would love that to of happened to me. I wont ever sue friends or close to my heart places but the council I would sue for every penny if I had the evidence you had
So sad. IOW council is so obsessed with punishing shoppers for parking that the shops and businesses in our towns are dying. Free, unlimited parking in Newport would help save the town and save the council a fortune in wardens wages.
Totally agree Delilah Ash, kill the High St, I required the other day an item from a shop in the High St, Newport but as there is a lack of free parking for even 10mins I ordered it online from their mainland central stores, it was delivered FOC next day to my door. Also saved money on the drive to town and back.
So how exactly would they work??
Each shop has at least 2 people who no doubt drive in to work. Free unlimited parking in the high street. Thank you very much there would not been any parking spaces as the shop staff and bank staff would park there free. Genius idea
It’s the general public that load the purses who’s the bloody fools ????
Little tip. After 8pm you can park anywhere. Hi
Don’t know how much a ticket is nowadays but say £30 x 21595 = £647,850. Yet I’m sure council tax will still go up because they will throw all that money at the floating bridge
What I want to know is how they have given out over 1500 tickets a month? Yet can’t even fill 1 potholes on my road
It is only there to line the pension pot. Surely you knew that.
That’s £537,500 if all tickets were paid within the first 14days at £25
If they have 10 traffic wardens that’s around £300,000 in wages, tax,ni pension etc ,then the cost of lease car, mobile and camera, the processing of PCN ,admin in county hall and managers, then legal costs and maybe court costs etc, actually probably cost tax payers more than fines – great.
