JUNIOR GOLFERS START NEW SEASON ON FINE FORM

Newport’s Nick Matthews

The first event of the Junior Development Tour and Order of Merit took place on a gloriously sunny day at Cowes Golf Club on Sunday 21st April.

Last Sunday’s event followed on from the Isle of Wight Junior Golf winter series for all junior golfers, from beginners to established Island golf club members.

The Island’s juniors certainly started the new 2019 season in great shape and posted some very good scores.

Newport GC’s Nick Matthews, who won both the Handicap and Scratch Order of Merit trophies in 2018, continued his fine form and started this season with an excellent 39 points, level par to top both the scratch and nett categories on the day.

Harry Lake from Westridge GC scored 36 points and Harvey Simpkins from Shanklin & Sandown GC was close behind in third place with 34 points, which translated to second place in the scratch event.

The IWJG Development Tour/Order of Merit Stablefords are open to all junior members of an Island golf club who have a CONGU handicap. The next event is at Westridge GC on Sunday 19th May. In addition to the Stableford competition on 19th May, coaching will be available for non-handicap juniors at Westridge.
