Cornwall beat the Isle of Wight by 4 wickets with just 7 balls remaining in a 2-day U18 game at Newclose earlier this week. In their first innings on Monday, the Isle of Wight hit 188 runs before being skittled out in the 53rd over. Opener Josh Carpenter top scored with a knock of 89 before being caught by Matt Bonds off the bowling of Tom Fox-Dean. In reply, Cornwall were 104-2, but a sensational 7-82 from Freddie Gurney saw the visitors dismissed for 196, leaving the Isle of Wight with a deficit of just 8 runs. The Isle of Wight reached a formidable 237 off 55.5 overs in their 2nd innings on Tuesday with captain Sam Mills top scoring with 78 before being caught lbw off the bowling of Joseph Clifton-Griffith. Mills was ably supported by Josh Carpenter, who made 71 before being clean bowled by Ton Fox-Dean. A century from captain Dan Phillips steered Cornwall to victory before he was caught by Harry Everard for 112 off the bowling of Gurney. Isle of Wight 188 all out and 237 all out Cornwall 196 all out and 230/6 – Cornwall won by 4 wickets
Next up for Isle of Wight U18s is Herefordshire, with a 2-day game on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
