The IWTTA Table Tennis League restarted this week with a total of 23 teams taking part in the first full season since 2019.
With restrictions lifted, matches are now being played in the usual format, with 9 singles and a doubles.
There are a number of new players taking part and some new teams. Wroxall have now joined the league for the first time in many years, and Shorwell have a team entered after a short break, so table tennis is starting to revitalise after the disruption of the pandemic.
|Wroxall A||6||Ryde Rivals||4|
|Newport Vics A||4||Ryde Royals||6|
|Ryde A||10||Newport Vics B||0|
|Ryde Raiders||7||Shanklin Warriors||3|
Wroxall A met Ryde Rivals in an exciting match that could have gone either way. Wroxall’s Tom Johnson had 3 hard matches and came through them all, plus teaming up with Roger Hookey to win the doubles and be named player of the match. Roger has returned to Island table tennis this season after a long break and had a good first match with 2 singles victories along with the doubles win.
The Rivals young Joe Chapman, who has come up through the ranks from Division Three, had a good win against Carl Rye. Wroxall ended up winners by 6-4 thanks to the doubles victory.
Another close match was between Ryde Royals and Newport Vics A, with player of the match Ryde’s Hugh Idle, one of the Island’s top players, finishing the match with 3 easy victories.
Newport’s Island Games star Anna Joyce won 2 matches but could not get the better of Idle. Ryde’s Ricky Lock was on form too with 2 wins and a doubles victory with Idle, giving Ryde the match by 6 games to 4.
|Havenstreet Locos||8||Undercliff Belters||2|
|Ryde Red Kites||9||St Lawrence Lizards||1|
|Shanklin Skuas||9||Ryde Rangers||1|
Shanklin Skuas are early leaders of the Second Division with a 9-1 victory over Ryde Rangers. The Skuas Spike Hughes has started the season in great form winning all his matches and looks to be one of the players to beat this season.
|Shorwell A||7||Ryde Rookies||3|
|Ryde Rustics||7||Ryde Rockets||3|
Shorwell A made a great start to their first season for some years with an impressive victory over young Ryde Rookies. The Rookies Ryan Cates looks like one to watch, winning all his matches in straight sets.
