On a day when 2 other Isle of Wight hockey teams had their games postponed, the ladies 1XI came away with a point from their visit to Romsey.
Short, sharp play from Georgia Whittle, Saffron Hart, Sarah Shaw and the 2 halves, Jamie Payne and Emily Lord. allowed the team to move up the pitch and put pressure in the D at the start of the game. The island opened up scoring opportunities for forwards Katy Ednay and Evie Fairhurst, but Romsey’s defence kept the island at bay.
Supported by Claire Caddick, Kirsty Fraser and Crys O’Connell on the backline to transfer the ball and find new routes into the D, the Island Ladies were soon rewarded with a short corner. Sadly, Jaimie Payne’s shot was deflected by the keeper’s pads away from goal. A fantastic team move up the right-hand side opened a 1-on-1 chance between Evie Fairhurst and Romsey’s keeper. Fairhurst effortlessly slotted the ball past the keeper into the bottom corner to break the deadlock (0-1).
Half time: Romsey Ladies 0-1 Isle of Wight 1XI
Romsey were fired up in the 2nd half, which called the island’s defence into action. Dani Devenish and Kayleigh Pullen substituted well into their midfield roles and halted Romsey’s efforts. Sadly, as the clock ran down, Romsey won a flurry of short corners. In their final attempt, a Romsey player pounced on the ball and quickly slotted it into goal (1-1).
