The Isle of Wight Heart Care Club has raised £1,600 through a sponsored walk between Shide and Merstone.
Over 60 members participated on Sunday 3rd April, with several dogs, and the walkers were marshalled at all stages. Members from around the Island met up again, many having not seen each other during the lockdown. A minibus was on hand, kindly operated by Aspire.
Arriving at Shide on a perfect Spring morning, members were checked in by Lyn Smith, the IWHCC’s Senior Instructor, then mingled with the other walkers until given the go-ahead to start, with the fast walkers making a quick getaway.
The route took the walkers along a well-maintained cycle/footpath boarded by hedges, spring flowers, and trees silhouetted against a cloudless blue sky.
Some way into the walk the walkers were amazed to be overtaken by 90-year-old John Crowhurst – a West Wight member- who they watched disappear into the distance.
When reaching Merstone, a minibus was waiting to take anyone back to Blackwater if they needed a lift after their 3-mile walk. Many decided to ramble back making it a 6-mile round trip.
