ISLE OF WIGHT CRICKET SEASON BEGINS WITH VICTORIES FOR ST HELENS AND VENTNOR

St Helens beat Northwood and Ventnor 3rds overcame Freshwater in Division 1 on the opening day of the Isle of Wight cricket season on Saturday (11th May).

Isle of Wight Division 1

St Helens 213/7 Northwood 212/8 St Helens won by 3 wickets
Opener Callum Withum scored 50 before being caught off the bowling of Rob Holdcroft as Northwood reached a respectable total of 212 for the loss of 8 wickets in their 40 overs. Holdcroft was the pick of the bowlers for Northwood with figures of 4-25. St Helens surpassed Northwood’s knock with just 3 balls to spare with wicketkeeper Deans scoring an unbeaten 77.

Ventnor 3rds 123/5 Freshwater 119 all out Ventnor won by 5 wickets
Freshwater reached the modest total of 119 all out in 34.5 overs with Graham Gosden top scoring with 44 before being caught by Jake Toulson off the bowling of Mohan. Manu Mohan returned the best bowling figures for Ventnor, taking 4 wickets at the cost of just 16 runs. Ventnor went past the Freshwater total for the loss of 5 wickets with 8 overs to spare with Mark Price top scoring with an unbeaten 37.

Isle of Wight Division 2

Northwood 2nds 126/4 Ventnor 4ths 123 all out Northwood won by 6 wickets
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Ventnor limped to 123 all out in 35 overs with opener Mahesh Puttamadaiah making 32 before being caught off the bowling of Redmond. Neil Redmond was the pick of the Northwood bowlers, with 4 wickets for 15 runs. Northwood took 28 overs to overtake Ventnor for the loss of 4 wickets, with Dave Pratt scoring an unbeaten 69.

Shanklin & Godshill 3rds 58 all out Newport 2nds 230/7 Newport won by 172 runs
Newport won the toss and elected to bat, scoring at an impressive rate of 6.6 runs per over to reach the formidable total of 230/7 in their 35 overs. Aaron Hartup was Newport’s  leading run scorer with 47. Shanklin & Godshill could only manage 58 all out in reply in 22 overs.

Hampshire Division 3 (South)

Shanklin & Godshill 59/1 Portsmouth & Southsea 2nds 56 all out Shanklin & Godshill won by 9 wickets
Shanklin & Godshill have gone top of their league with an emphatic 9-wicket victory over Portsmouth and Southsea. The Pompey side were skittled out in 25 overs with Nathan Moore (4-10) and Henry Moore (3-13) inflicting the most damage. Shanklin took just over 8 overs to surpass the Portsmouth total with Jordan Langdon top scoring with 39 runs from 16 balls.

Ventnor 2nds 74/1 Ellingham 73 all out Ventnor won by 9 wickets
Ventnor have gone joint top with Shanklin & Godshill by trouncing Ellingham by 9 wickets. Ellingham were all out for 73 after just over 20 overs with George Watts the pick of the Ventnor bowlers, taking 5 wickets at the cost of just 9 runs. Ventnor took a mere 7 overs to go past the Ellingham total with Sam Guerin scoring a quick-fire 51 off just 26 balls.

Hampshire Division 4 (South)

Solent Rangers 122 all out Ryde 2nds 178/5 Ryde won by 56 runs
Having been put in to bat, Ryde reached a total of 178 for the loss of 5 wickets in their 45 overs, with Tom Durman and Tom Roscoe top-scoring with 29 runs. Ryde restricted Solent to 122 before skittling the home side out for 122 in the 37th over. Nathan Day (3-15) and Tom Durman (3-17) both took 3 wickets for Ryde.

Neither Ventnor 1sts nor Ryde 1sts were in action on Saturday (11th May).
