Island Roads are encouraging road users to use the official diversion during the current highway improvement work on Binstead Road, Ryde.
Large volumes of vehicles are currently cutting through the Binstead Estate, even though the area is not designed to handle this level of traffic.
This is causing safety concerns, including vehicles mounting the pavements and also causing damage to grass verges as vehicles struggle to pass on the narrow estate roads.
An Island Roads spokesperson said:
“We appreciate the official diversion is a longer route but it is suitable for all types of vehicle as well as higher volumes of cars.”
Ian Stephens, IW Council member for Ryde West said:
“I would also ask motorists to follow the diversion route which is well signed. While it is quite right the buses are able to use the estate to provide a vital link during work, there are currently too many cars using these roads.”
Island Roads work at Binstead Road will continue until Friday 30th January, then pause for the Southern Water work on Elenor’s Grove before resuming again on 13th April for a further 2 weeks.
The official diversion route is via Station Road, Briddlesford Road, Mersley Road, Mersley Down Road, Brading Down Road, New Road, Brading High Street, Rowborough Lane, Beaper Shute, Brading Road, and Marlborough Road.
Thats been happening from day one, surely Island roads and the iow council knew that would happen. It was encouraged by announcing that parking would be cancelled on Jellicoe Road to enable the buses to go through. People are selfish don’t you know and common sense goes out the door. I live quite close and avoid it like the plague and watch the lemmings heading towards the chaos in disbelief, well, not really, I expected it and wasn’t disappointed in my assumption,
People always use the same excuse, that it’s not “well signed”. No, use your brain. Typical lazy island motorists are the issue here. It takes no longer to get to Ryde/Newport than it usually would. Just more incompetent driving and forward planning from island motorists.
Why island motorists, are mainland motorists better?
It would say so, tougher driving tests on the mainland.
What do they expect!!
If Island Roads are concerned about motorists using the same logical diversion route through Binstead Estate as the much larger buses, just wait until the 3 month road works commence further down the main route between Newport and Ryde at Elenors Grove commences at the end of January.
The “official” diversion route then will take vehicles to Ryde on a similar advised route over the Downs – thankfully the traffic lights at the Hare and Hounds should be fixed after 4 months out of action by early February (!) – with HGV vehicles coming off the Wightlink ferry at Fishbourne being asked to go via Sandown to get to Ryde. Many drivers will use the shorter and most logical route through Firestone Copse – again Island Roads will advise against – but there is a potential for vans and goods vehicles also to use that route with inevitable results for congestion and accidents.
If thought had been given, perhaps Firestone Copse Road should have been made one way from Wootton Bridge to Ryde during these works, as vehicles will be allowed through the Elenors Grove to Wootton Bridge one way from Ryde during them ?
Thats easy to deal with … close Fireestone Copse Road with a physical barrier at each end
This is a complete nightmare when I witnessed cars mounting pavements to pass buses ! You watch once Southern water start doing the works they should have been doing years ago ! & Craptiva concreting over the Island & the inevitable road closures that go with building!
Any vehicle mounting pavements should be
heavily fined.
Where is Traffic law on the island.
A lot of cars using jellicoe road as a cut through are very local, they aren’t going to use other diversion routes. Where on earth did island roads think that traffic was going to go. Let’s face it when you get two double deckers and the school run traffic its going to be grid lock.
Install bollards on the edge of pavements islandwide so no
Numpties can mount or park on pavements.
Job done, it is not rocket science
IT IS CALLED SAFETY, something the island lacks.
Councils in England have been given new powers
to STOP numpties parking on pavements.
Let’s hope IW Council have the balls to implement
such a ban.

I’m not against immigration, I am against poor integration. But I do have to laugh when somebody who’s mum and dad came over in the 80s calls themselves British. They’re not. The may have “British” in their passports but in their culture and their genes they have something foreign.

Island Roads should have worked harder to keep the main road open.
