Island Echo has been shortlisted for the ICNN Community News Website of the Year award in the newsawards 2021.
The prestigious national awards were established in 1997 and are the only such awards dedicated to celebrating the best in news media print, technology and business innovation across the country.
Island Echo has been shortlisted alongside fellow Independent Community News Network (ICNN) members Cornwall Reports, Dorset Biz News, Hackney Citizen, Lyme Online and Thurrock Nub News.
In 2020, Island Echo received a ‘highly commended’ in the same category, which is once again sponsored by Google News Initiative.
A glitz and glam ceremony will be held in London next month where the winner of this and other awards will be announced. Previous hosts include Michael McIntyre, Jonathan Ross, Joanna Lumley and Jimmy Carr.
Darren Toogood, Editor and Publisher of Island Echo, says:
“It’s fantastic to be shortlisted for the ICNN Community News Website of the Year for the second year running.
“My team and I are thrilled to be heading to the capital and we look forward to meeting the 5 other community websites shortlisted for this award, during what is set to be a fantastic night at the Royal Lancaster London”.
There are over 300 independent community news publications in the UK and Ireland. The majority of these titles, including Island Echo, are run by individuals or small teams producing news content of important community value.
Yes this is good news, well done, but I wish some of peoples comments were not deleted willy nilly, anything against tourism or the so called elite always seem to be deleted.
Yes I agree, no.1 for local news 10/10.
Comments page is boring, stale and extremely frustrating, with comments not being posted and/or deleted.
No sense of humour and no debate.
It seems like it is heavily censored with no free speech or opinions.
Such a shame, as I know some people who don’t even try to comment any more. Could do better 1/10.
( Come on IE, post this ) x
I commented here yesterday listing all the problems this site has now that it never used to have, the captcha thing, limit on how many words, posts etc, Today that comment if it ever was allowed here at all is not showing. So fed up with the lack of freedom of speech here now.
One hopes that freedom of speech unless unlawful will be upheld as much as possible to show the ‘true’ feelings of Islanders, NOT just what the moderator wishes to see
Other than that a wonderful news source, and a lot of hard work and time by Darren et al.
Thank you
Darren you have an amazing news portal , When I lived on the island and even now being away I visit your site daily, the award
is most certainly deserved by you and your team. Fingers crossed you win.
