The second Island Echo Centenary Cup was held on Friday (26th January), with 36 entrants from all divisions of the Isle of Wight League taking part. The competition is a handicapped singles tournament, which means players from all the divisions stand a chance of making it to the final. The 1st 2 in each group made it through to the quarter-finals. The oldest competitor was 93-year-old Bert Pace; the youngest was 13-year-old Ji Lock. The group stages were contested 1st – with 6 groups of 6 competitors – after which the knockout stages started with the last 16. The quarter-finals were played on the night; however, the semi-finals and final will be contested on Final’s Night on 1st May 2024. All 3 divisions were represented in the quarter-finals, whilst the semi-finals will be contested by 3 Division 1 players and a Division 3 player. 2 junior players – Ethan Millward and Ryan Cates – will meet Shane Cates and Alex Rorke respectively in their bid to make the final.

Ryde C look strong contenders to take the title from clubmates Ryde A, after their 10-0 drubbing of Newport Vics B. Ryde’s Paul Rainford, Ryan Cates and Graham Evans had a reasonably easy time of things, except against Newport’s Barry Joyce, who took Rainford to four sets and Evans to five. Newport Vics A are having a hard season, and this week they lost heavily to Shanklin A, to slip to bottom of the table behind their B team. Newport’s Anna Joyce and Dave Hilliam managed a win each over Shanklin’s Don Hobbs, although Hilliam was unlucky to lose in 5 sets to Shanklin’s Mike Turner. Shanklin’s Mike Bulpitt was unbeaten and player of the match.
