redjet4UPDATED: Red Funnel have today (Thursday) launched an investigation into the circumstances which led their flagship hi-speed craft, Red Jet 5, to collide with a buoy during a regular cross-Solent sailing.

During the 05:45 sailing between Southampton and Cowes, Red Jet 5 came into contact with the Hythe Knock buoy in Southampton Water, damaging the front of the vessel. Thankfully, no persons were injured in the incident.

Disruption has been present throughout the day so far, with the company reducing their hi-speed service to just one craft and an hourly operation.

Due to the withdrawal of RJ5 from service and the annual refit of a third craft, Red Funnel will operate at xx:15 from Cowes and xx:45 from Southamptons until further notice.

Today’s incident comes less than 5 months after Red Jet 4 was involved in a collision with an out of control yacht, which came into contact with the side of RJ4 leaving damage to the vessel’s hull as it left it’s West Cowes mooring.
