Matej Gruber, who tragically lost his life when his van overturned near Cranmore in 2022, died from traumatic head injuries, an inquest has concluded.
The 45-year-old carpenter, of Mayfield Drive in Newport, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the A3054 at Ningwood Hill in the early hours of 23rd July 2022.
The crash occurred shortly before 01:25 when Mr Gruber, originally from Slovenia, lost control of his silver Renault Trafic van just to the west of Cranmore Avenue. The vehicle overturned, with Mr Gruber partially exiting the vehicle through the driver’s side window, resulting in fatal injuries at the scene.
He was pronounced dead at 01:36.
It has been confirmed that Mr Gruber was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
A Section 9C inquest, held in writing on Tuesday (26th August), concluded that Mr Gruber died as a result of a road traffic collision, with the cause of death given as severe head injuries.
Following the tragic incident, Matej’s family paid heartfelt tribute to a man described as having “a good heart” and being “always smiling”. He was remembered as someone who worked hard, loved his family deeply, and brought energy and warmth to those around him.

I cannot believe people drive intoxicated.
The sooner driverless vehicles come along
the better, much safer for everyone.
No one will be allowed to drive soon in the
new world, one good thing the roads will be
much safer.
Do u honestly think robotic driverless cars will be safer? They’ll need vast amounts of research before that applies. Meanwhile, if u drive drunk, even if you kill or maim no one and are lucky enough to live to tell the tale, you should be banned for life. No half measures. Did this “energetic, smiley man” think of his family or other people when he got into the driver’s seat, drunk? Sorry to sound harsh but people need to be forced to take responsibility for their own actions.
That is very true, but so many motorists
know it is wrong to drink and drive
but they still do it!
Driverless vehicles won’t have that problem
and it will be less of a burden on the emergency
services who have to attend to unnesseccary
self inflicted accidents.
Also driverless vehicles won’t take the p*ss
and park illegally.
The future will be much safer for everyone.
Why the f__k do you have to comment on every bloody article, you numpty.
Because there are so many numpties
who don’t know right from wrong, are you
one of those numpties.
It makes one wonder, bless you!
Another inquest that has taken three years to conclude. It is a disgrace.
