A man in his 90s died after a blanket wrapped around him caught fire when it came into contact with an electrical heater, an inquest has heard.
92-year-old Glyn Bennett suffered severe burns in the early hours of 21st April 2024 after a fire broke out inside his home on Shanklin Road, Sandford, near Whitely Bank.
A Section 9C inquest has detailed that the blanket ignited after coming into contact with a heater present in the room.
Mr Bennett was taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, but died at 08:40 later that morning. The medical cause of death was recorded as severe burns.
The retired engineer, born in Manchester in August 1931, was the husband of Eileen Bennett, a retired nurse.
Senior Coroner Caroline Sumeray concluded that Mr Bennett’s death was accidental.

That is so sad, also the fact he had to have a portable heater on and a blanket! He should have been able to have his heating on? Hope I’ve not said anything wrong, but our elderly should not have to worry about being cold they should be able to have their heating on and be warm! it’s not fair!!
Let’s never forget this Labour Government STOPPED the
winter fuel allowance for pensioners when they gained
power.
All pensioners should be provided with free Central heating
they shouldn’t live in fear of having to turn their heating on.

I am elderly and disabled. If I want any help I will have to cheat the system like many others do, but I won’t. None of our governments and I mean NONE of them will help the elderly If your a criminal or from a foreign land, you will get everything. What I don’t understand is that we keep voting the scum in knowing that we will get no help.
