An inmate who assaulted a prison officer with boiling water and sugar at HMP Isle of Wight has been handed a 12-month prison sentence.
35-year-old Andit Tekelemariam had been charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker in relation to a shocking incident on 26th November, as first reported by Island Echo.
Tekelemariam was originally sentenced on 10th February to 12 months in prison, consecutive to the 7-year prison sentence he is already serving for attacking sex workers in Coventry.
However, an application was made to reopen the case, with the matter returning to the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 13th March.
It was last Friday that magistrates decided to reduce the punishment to run concurrently, instead of consecutively. They did, however, note that the offence was so serious because it was a deliberate assault using boiling water and sugar, and because injuries were caused.
A mixture of boiling water and sugar is commonly referred to as ‘prison napalm’ because it creates a sticky liquid capable of causing more serious burns than hot water alone.
Last November’s attack came just days after an unconnected stabbing against prison officers at HMP Isle of Wight, which left 3 staff members injured.

12 month for naparming a prison officer is a joke its agony and he could be scared for life thes magistrates are so out of touch its criminal make them walk those landings and put themselves on offer if i was those prison officers id walk out in protest discusting overpaid out of touch magistrates who have no clue its an insult hes a sex offender transfer him to a mainsteam prison where he will become the victim these magistrates are no longer fit for purpose
Same sort of name every time.
Expell.
Is it any wonder that people do not want to work in our prisons?
Only 12 months and concurrently? The sentencers want locking up, should 2years min and added on. It’s an insult to prison staff and an invitation for inmates to injure prison staff without punishment. It’s an absolute disgrace. Courts are no longer fit for purpose.
You couldn’t pay me enough to work there!
12 months is laughable for that level of violence & harm. To run concurrently is adding insult to injury. No deterrent at all.
