3 prison officers have been injured, with 2 taken to hospital, following a stabbing incident at HMP Isle of Wight.
The shocking attack is understood to have occurred within the Inpatient Unit on the Albany site off Parkhurst Road, Newport, yesterday (Thursday).
It’s alleged that a prisoner attacked staff members using an improvised weapon – known as a shiv.
This led to 2 officers being rushed across the road to St Mary’s Hospital for urgent treatment.
It has been confirmed that a 32-year-old man sustained facial injuries, whilst a 28-year-old man received injuries to his right arm. The third staff member received minor injuries.
Island Echo is told that one of the stab wounds narrowly missed an officer’s artery in his neck. But thankfully, both hospitalised individuals have now been discharged.
Police have launched an investigation into the alleged serious assaults, with enquiries underway to establish the circumstances of the incident.
No arrests have been made at this time.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has said:
“Attacks on our staff are cowardly and unacceptable which is why we push for the strongest possible punishments”.
The MoJ says it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.
It’s understood that the prisoner has now been moved to the Segregation and Reintegration Unit.

Shouldn’t take much of an investigation. Just check the cctv on that wing
China has the right idea with dealing with criminals…

But China’s idea of criminals is anybody who speaks out against their beloved leaders or questions any form of injustice….think again you womble.
If digital ID’s are mandated in the UK
we will be living like people do in China
Saudi would know how to deal with such persons
Give him another 10 years then take away all privileges ..but no can’t do that he’s got rights..
Reintegration Unit…pathetic.
Hope all the staff are OK including the ones that witnessed the incident.
The prisoner should be now charged with attempted murder but no doubt it will only be a slap on the wrist for him.
More likely GBH with intent.
Although knife attacks are relatively uncommon, our prison officers face danger every time they go on shift. It is high time that their pay reflected the risks they face, espcially as prisons are so full and seem to become more and more violent.
A very risky job.
I wonder what would happen if no one did such a
job!
Well said Marcus. You seem to be the one with common sense here, yet again. They know right from wrong. so they choose to take the wrong road, then it is down to them. Capital punishment is out because of our weak governments. So what next, you may ask, simples, birch the bastards, on more than one occasion.
