Despite the inclement weather, the spirit of both Isle of Wight Hockey Club ladies teams was not dampened.
Chichester vs IOW Ladies 1s (1-3)
Ignoring the rain, the Isle of Wight women’s first team started off slowly against Chichester, with both teams trying to gain the upper hand. After 20 minutes Chichester scored first against the run of play and the Island side got through to half-time 1-0 down.
After a formation tweak, the second half allowed a much higher tempo and an equaliser came after 10 minutes, with Emily ‘just making sure’ after a lovely team move. The remainder of the match was constant Island pressure and after some simple, clean passing Carolyn found herself at the far post to put the Isle of Wight 2-1 up.
With 5 minutes to spare, Pip sealed the win with a third goal. (Goals Emily, Carolyn, Pip).
IOW Ladies 2s vs Alton (1-2)
The IOW women’s second team welcomed Alton to a very wet and windy Smallbrook. The home side started strong, piling on the pressure. Aided by four new players making their debut to senior hockey, fantastic upfront play created multiple shots on goal, leading to a conversion by Megan and putting the Island 1-0 up. Alton struck with a quick counter-attack from a 16 hit, bringing the score 1-1 as both teams headed to half-time.
An evenly matched second half came to an end after a short-corner conversion put Alton ahead. The island was unable to equalise by the final whistle.
