Ryde A continue their dominance in the Isle of Wight Table Tennis League Division 1 with a 9-1 victory over the siblings of Newport Vics B. However, Newport’s 15-year-old Sean Joyce gained a notable scalp with a 5-set victory over Roger Nevell.
Ryde Royals met Ryder Raiders in a close and hard-fought encounter. The Royals’ Conal Howells and Ricky Lock were unlucky to gain only 1 win, but teenage star Hugh Idle took all 3 of his games comfortably. The doubles decided the match, with Idle and Lock joining up to win a 4-set thriller against the Raiders Mike Prior and Timothy Giles. The match ended 6-4 to the Royals.
A full complement of matches was played and match of the week was between Shanklin B and Ryde Red Kites. The match went on late into the night with almost all games going to 4 or 5 sets. Going into the doubles the score was 5-4 to Shanklin but the experienced pairing of Ryde’s Maggie Preston and Manfred Gelhard told against Shanklin’s Alan Dennis and Garry Thorp and the match ended in a draw.
2 newly promoted teams, the teenagers of Ryde Rookies and the rather older Ryde Raptors met in an enthralling match. The Raptors gained a 6-4 victory with an emphatic doubles win after some classic singles encounters.
Newport Vics C stay in contention for the title after a 7-3 victory over fellow contenders Shanklin B, with Newport’s Trevor Percival player of the match after 3 emphatic singles wins.
Ryde Rebels and Ryde Revellers continue to dominate as both took an 8-2 victory over Ryde Rustics and Wootton Wombles respectively. The Revellers Alan Burch and Rebels Peter Dove top the players’ averages with 100% each at this early stage of the league.
